Harris team suffers from huge staff churn – watchdog

Only four of the US vice president’s 47 original hires are still in the job, NGO OpenTheBooks says

US Vice President Kamala Harris has a staggering staff turnover rate of 91.5%, transparency watchdog OpenTheBooksreported on Monday, citing disclosures from the Senate. The revelation came days after President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris as his replacement.

OpenTheBooks, an NGO that monitors government spending, has analyzed the list of titles and names of the staffers at the Office of the Vice President, which it took from the semi-annual report of the Secretary of the Senate.

“As of March 31, 2024, only four of the initial 47 staffers from the first year are still employed– consistently and without interruption – by the vice president,” the group said.

The turnover rate for Biden’s staffers is 77%, as only 127 of his initial 560White House employees have remained in their position since 2021, OpenTheBooks said.

Harris’ problems retaining staff have been reported in the past, with The Hill describing her team as a “revolving door.” The political news website said in the summer of 2022 that more than 13 “high-profile aides” had left the vice president in less than a year.

Axios has cited “burnout, better opportunities and concern aboutbeing permanently branded a ‘Harris person’” as some of the reasons behind the high turnover rate at the vice president’s office.

Biden announced that he was leaving the race on Sunday, after weeks of growing concerns among Democrats and their supporters over his declining health and perceived ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.

Although Biden and multiple prominent Democrats have backed Harris as the party’s candidate for the presidency, the nominee will be officially decided at its national convention next month.

During her first campaign rally on Tuesday, Harris accused Trump of wanting to “take our country backward,” and spreading “chaos, fear and hate.”

Trump, in turn, has accused Harris of failing to tackle the illegal immigration crisis at the US border with Mexico, suggesting that “she could be far less competent” than Biden, “which is hard to believe.”

Trump shooter had a drone and multiple explosive devices, FBI director tells lawmakers

Christopher Wray said the FBI is investigating the shooter’s motive and if he had any accomplices.

FBI Director Christopher Wray confirmed to lawmakers on Wednesday that law enforcement recovered a drone and explosive devices from the gunman’s vehicle as part of its investigation into the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

“I’m prepared to answer questions here todayabout the shooter and his use of the drone,” Wray told the House Judiciary Committee at the start of what isexpected to be an hours long hearing.

Wray cautioned that the investigation is still ongoing, but said it appears at this point that ThomasCrooks had used the drone on the day of the shooting around 4 p.m. roughly 200 yards from where Trump spoke.

Wray added that it was currently being analyzed by the FBI and that the drone was in the gunman’s vehicle at the time of the shooting.

In addition to confirming details about the drone, Wray told lawmakers that the FBI investigation is focused on the shooter — indicating thatquestions about the Secret Service’s actions were being covered by other investigations. As part of the FBI’s probe, they are investigating what the shooter’s motive might have been and if he had any accomplices — with Wray saying the FBI has so far no evidence that points to the latter.

Wray also told the committee that theFBI found eight cartridges on the roofwhere Crooks was positioned. Law enforcement also recoveredthree explosive devices, Wray said — two from his vehicle and one from his residence.

Wray’s testimony before the House Judiciary Committee is his first public appearance before Congress since the July 13 shooting. The hearing was on the books before the shooting, but Wray is now expected to get a laundry list of questions about the FBI’s ongoing investigation.

It also comes two days after then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee — sparking bipartisan frustration among lawmakers who felt like she evaded their questions. Cheatle announced on Tuesday that she would resign.

Wray, during his opening statement,called the shooting an "an attack on democracy" and said he was prepared to give the committee “all the information I can, given where we are at this point.” (What a tool)

THIS IS THE WRAY — FBI Director CHRISTOPHER WRAY is wrapping up more than three hours of questioning from members of the House Judiciary Committee about the FBI’s failures surrounding the assassination attempt of former President DONALD TRUMP.

But while questions still swirl about how gunman THOMAS MATTHEW CROOKS was able to take shots at Trump and kill a rallygoer, Wray did disclose some new details from the agency’s investigation.

While the oversight hearingwas scheduled prior to the July 13 shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, the event dominated Wray’s testimony aslawmakerson both sides of the aisle repeatedlyasked how a gunman could have gotten so close to killing a presidential candidate.

Committee Chair JIM JORDAN(R-Ohio) opened the hours long hearing lambasting the FBI and Justice Department, noting that “a lot of unanswered questions about the security failures” before and during the rally, while top Democrat JERRY NADLER (D-N.Y.) noted that the political violence “should surprise no one” but that the recent incident still deserved answers. Wray’s testimony comes two days after the disastrous appearance of Secret Service Director KIMBERLY CHEATLE before the House Oversight Committee. Her frequent evasions when pressed for details on the incident added to the pressure for her resignation, which came yesterday.

Notably, Wray was much more forthcoming. During his opening statement, the director noted the shooting was an “attack on our democracy” and promised to disclose “as much information” as he could.

What’s new: Crooks flew a drone 200 yards from the rally venue prior to the shooting, Wray said, in anapparent attempt to scope out the area. The drone was recovered in his vehicle after the shooting, along with two previously reported explosive devices that were "relatively crude" but "had the ability to be detonated remotely," he said. And while Wray noted the FBI "do not yet have

a clear picture" of Crooks’ motive, he “appears to have done a lot of searches of public figures in general,” before eventually zeroing in on Trump. One chilling detail: On July 6 — the same day he registered for the Butler rally — Crooks did a Google search, Wray said: “How far away was [LEE HARVEY] OSWALD from [JOHN F.] KENNEDY?”
