Reporter: Did [Biden] believe he was going to lose to Donald Trump [so he dropped out]?
Jean-Pierre: I think that [Biden] actually answered this question [last night]. I think the American people think he answered the question. He said, "I revere this office, but I love my country more."
Reporter: Before [Biden[ made the decision, he said that there are three things that could persuade him [to drop out]. The Lord Almighty, a medical condition, and if his team showed him he could not win. So was it because of the polling?
Jean-Pierre: I can tell you it was not a medical decision…I'm just not going to get beyond that.
Jean-Pierre: We are going to debunk the false characterization of [Harris]. She was not a border czar. And it's not just us, independent fact checkers have said the same thing, that that did not exist, and that is not true.
Reporter: Yesterday, and again today, you insisted that [Biden] didn't make this decision because because of a medical condition, it wasn't about his health. Yesterday you said that he could have finished a second term if he won one, so was this decision to step out of the race just a political calculus? He just didn't think he could beat Trump?
Jean-Pierre: I just don't have anything else to add to what [Biden] said last night…he wanted to unite the country, he wanted to pass the torch.
Reporter: I was wondering if [Biden] sought assurances from other leading democratic candidates, that they wouldn't challenge her [Harris]?
Jean-Pierre: I'm not going to get into specifics, or behind the scene conversations. I'm just not.
Reporter: If she [Harris] decides to show a little bit more of her own views, on Gaza for example, is [Biden] okay with that?
Jean-Pierre: A hypothetical that I don't want to go down a rabbit hole in.
Jean-Pierre: It's an emotional moment for everyone, including me [Biden dropping out]. It's an emotional moment. You do these jobs, they don't pay all that well, as you know.
[Jean-Pierre's salary is the White House employee maximum, $180,000/yr]
Jean-Pierre: We are going to provide protection to more than five hundred thousand people, and keep families together, in the US. That is something [Biden] announced back in June, and that is something that we are going to continue to do.
Reporter: Last night, Biden] kept with the theme of saving democracy, eluding to the fact that maybe former President Trump is a threat to democracy. [Harris] using the same language. Is this a dangerous rhetoric?
Jean-Pierre: It is important that we continue to talk about unity. It is. Saving democracy, making sure we are united as a country..unity is the theme that you heard from his remarks last night.
Reporter: He still talks about a threat to democracy. There are now three public threats to the former president that we know of, Iran being one of them, the shooter the other night, so how many threats are enough to lower the temperature?
Jean-Pierre: [Biden] has called on lowering the temperature. But here's the thing, it takes on all of us to lower the temperature. All of us. We can read between the lines at what I mean by all of us.
