(NewsNation) — With President Joe Biden’s popularity waning, he stepped aside and now the Democratic Party ostensibly has new life.
Vice President Kamala Harris has breathed fresh life into the 2024 election. Over $200 million has been raised, despite Harris not yet being officially declared the Democrats’ nominee.
Notable billionaires such as Elon Musk, Bill Ackman and JP Morgan CEO have all backed former President Donald Trump’s campaign for a second term, but Harris has friends in high places too.
Reed Hastings
The Netflix co-founder and executive chair revealed he made a $7 million donation to the Harris campaign earlier this week when speaking to The Information.
“After the depressing debate, we are in the game again,” Hastings told the outlet, noting it was the largest donation he had made to any single politician.
Reid Hoffman
The LinkedIn cofounder has endorsed Harris but was already a longtime Democrat donor before her imminent ascension.
On Wednesday, Hoffman appeared on CNN to explain why he was backing Harris ahead of the 2024 election.
Hoffman has already donated to the Biden-Harris cause — most recently for $923,000 in January — to the tune of $1.7 million. There will ostensibly be no more this cycle, however.
“I’d already maxed out to Biden-Harris,” Hoffman told CNN.
George and Alex Soros
The Democrat megadonors have backed Harris, but it is unclear if they have, or will financially support her campaign.
Alex Soros did post a message of support to X last Sunday, alongside a photo of he and Harris arm-in-arm.
“It’s time for us all to unite around Kamala Harris and beat Donald Trump,” Alex wrote. “She is the best and most qualified candidate we have. Long live the American Dream!”
A spokesperson for George Soros told The Wall Street Journal that the 93-year-old was also backing Harris.
Melinda French Gates
The ex-wife of Bill Gates endorsed Vice President Harris on Monday and told CBS Mornings Thursday that she has contributed to her campaign.
French Gates admitted it is the first time that she has publicly endorsed a candidate.
“I think she is a woman of our time,” French Gates told CBS Mornings.
“I am proud to support Vice President Harris. During her years in the White House, she has proven that she knows how to lead through crises while pushing for the change we need,” French Gates wrote on X last Monday.
“I want her fighting for our country for the next four years.”
Sheryl Sandberg
The former Meta COO has endorsed Harris, putting out a glowing statement on Instagram last Monday, though it is unclear if she has, or will, donate to her campaign.
“Vice President @kamalaharris has already made history once – becoming the first Black and South Asian woman to hold her office, and she will do it again in November,” Sandberg wrote.
“She is an accomplished leader, a fierce advocate of abortion rights, and the strongest candidate to lead our country forward.”
Vinod Khosla
The venture capitalist called for an open convention after President Biden decided to step aside but just a day later, called for Democrats to unite behind Harris.
“Time for all ‘not MAGA’ folks to come together for @KamalaHarris to beat Trump and save our democracy, reject bad values, reject Project 2025 and the dictatorship that Trump loves, all while being a good global citizen,” Khosla wrote last Monday on X.
