Trump just defeated the EU without a single shot being fired. The EU cannot afford it's welfare state, a trade war, and contributing to NATO. Trump is calling their bluff on both fronts. The hypocrisy of Germany only spending 1% of GDP on contributing to NATO defense and then engaging in trade deals that make Germany reliant on Russia while claiming that Russia is a threat is clear. Doing so under the protection that we so graciously have provided adds insult to injury. Trump has called out the EU on unfair trading practices which have favored European exporters and cost American lives over the decades. The EU cannot stand without the US subsidizing it in defense and on trade matters and Trump has just pulled those supports away. On top of this, it has been reported that Theresa May shared the Brexit white paper with Merkel before sharing it with MPs. May is in such a weak position domestically that she might be forced to “abdicate the throne” and become the Dutches of Windsor. If this comes to pass, Merkel will lose her control over Britain much like she seems to have lost control of Italy. Britain itself faces collapse in the absence of Brexit occurring. The only way for the EU to survive in this environment will be to elevate defense spending renegotiate trade deals with America, reduce the welfare state in large part by enforcing borders.
