Trump Shooting Victims’ Families Break Silence

The families of two bystanders injured during the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump have come forward with statements that shed new light on the incident.

 

The shooting, which occurred on July 13 at the Butler County Fair Grounds in Pennsylvania, left multiple victims hospitalized and one dead.

 

James “Jim” Copenhaver, 74, and David “Jake” Dutch, 57, were both critically injured when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at the Trump rally.

 

Fox News reported that the Copenhaver family expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of support” as Jim recovers from what they described as “life-altering injuries” at Allegheny General Hospital.

 

The Copenhaver family said in a statement released by Allegheny Health Network, “Jim would like to especially thank the first responders, medics, and hospital staff who have provided him with initial and continuing care.”

 

“Additionally, Jim would like to express his thoughts and prayers for the other victims, their families, and President Trump,” they added.

 

The family has requested privacy as Copenhaver grapples with the aftermath of what they termed a “horrible, senseless, and unnecessary act of violence,” the New York Post shared.

 

Copenhaver was discharged from Allegheny General Hospital late Friday, marking a significant milestone in his recovery process.

 

Copenhaver’s family recently told the Washington Examiner: “At this time, the Copenhaver family would kindly request that friends, the public, and the media respect the family’s privacy and allow for Jim to recover from the life-altering injuries that he sustained on July 13, 2024.”

 

Meanwhile, Dutch’s family reported that his condition had improved to “serious but stable” by Wednesday, July 17.

 

The Dutch family praised the surgical team at the Western Pennsylvania hospital for their life-saving efforts, Fox reported.

 

“David and our entire family are especially grateful to all the first responders and medical professionals who saved his life, including the Life Flight and trauma surgical teams at AGH,” they stated.

 

Dutch was eventually discharged on Wednesday, July 24.

 

The shooting claimed the life of 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, who died heroically while shielding his family from the gunfire.

 

Comperatore, a firefighter, was remembered at his funeral as a loving father and dedicated public servant.

 

Former President Trump, who suffered a minor injury when a bullet grazed his ear, paid tribute to Comperatore during his speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee.

 

With Comperatore’s firefighter jacket and helmet displayed on stage, Trump said, “He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect them from flying bullets… what a fine man he was. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for others.”

 

The attempted assassination has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the political landscape, potentially influencing the upcoming election cycle and shaping public discourse on national security.

 

Crooks’ apparent goal was to assassinate the former president, though no motive has been officially disclosed by law enforcement.
