Israeli soldiers suspected of raping Palestinian prisoner arrested, sparking far-right riot
Minister among Israelis storming notorious Sde Teiman detention facility in solidarity with the suspects
The soldiers were suspected of abusing a Palestinian detainee, who according to Arab48 is suffering from "a serious wound in his rectum area".
The prisoner had been transferred from Sde Teiman in the Negev desert to a hospital in Beersheba, which is also in southern Israel. Haaretz said the prisoner is unable to walk.

Israeli Troops Held for Questioning in Prisoner Abuse Investigation
At least nine reservists were detained at a military base holding thousands of Gazans, prompting ultranationalists to break into the base in protest.
The reservists’ detentions soon sparked a crisis at the base where the alleged abuse took place, called Sde Teiman, where videos posted on social media showed reservists shouting in anger about the raid to detain the soldiers — a rare instance of Israeli soldiers confronting their own.
The tensions escalated, videos showed, when a crowd of flag-waving civilian protesters broke into the base through its metal gates in support of the detained reservists. By late afternoon, the military said police and soldiers had driven the protesters out of the base.
Later, videos emerged showing protesters who had forced their way into the Beit Lid base, where Israel’s military courts and military police are headquartered, and where the reservists were taken for questioning. Some broke into the court building at Beit Lid.
The confrontation underscored how emboldened Israel’s far right has become. Among the protesters at Sde Teiman was at least one far-right lawmaker, Zvi Sukkot of the Religious Zionist Party, who could be seen in one video squeezing into the base through a gate as a uniformed man tried to push him back. And Israel’s far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, leader of the Religious Zionist Party, said soldiers must not be arrested like “criminals.”
“I’m calling on the chief military prosecutor, get your hands off the reservists,” Mr. Smotrich wrote on X.
But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took a different tone in a brief statement, calling for calm at Sde Teiman and saying that he “strongly condemns the break-in.”

Maduro is declared winner in Venezuela's presidential election as opposition claims it prevailed
Venezuela’s opposition claimed victory in Sunday’s presidential election, setting up a showdown with the government, which earlier declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner
U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the U.S. has "serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people,” speaking in Tokyo.
The delay in announcing results — six hours after polls were supposed to close — indicated a deep debate inside the government about how to proceed after Maduro’s opponents came out early in the evening all but claiming victory.
When Maduro finally came out to celebrate the results, he accused unidentified foreign enemies of trying to hack the voting system.
“This is not the first time that they have tried to violate the peace of the republic,” he said to a few hundred supporters at the presidential palace. He provided no evidence to back the claim but promised “justice” for those who try to stir violence in Venezuela.
