Hecate, an infernal Trinity

Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the cauldron boil and bake;

Eye of newt and toe of frog,

Wool of bat and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,

Lizard's leg and owlet's wing,

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Diana is the only pagan goddess mentioned by name in the New Testament (only in some Bible versions of Acts 19; many other Bibles refer to her as Artemis instead). As a result, she became associated with many folk beliefs involving goddess-like supernatural figures that Catholic clergy wished to demonize.

Diana was often conflated with Hecate, a goddess associated with the spirits of the dead and with witchcraft. These associations, and the fact that both figures are attested to in the Bible, made them a natural fit for the leader of the ghostly procession. Clergy used this identification to assert that the spirits were evil, and that the women who followed them were inspired by demons. As was typical of this time period, though pagan beliefs and practices were near totally eliminated from Europe, the clergy and other authorities still treated paganism as a real threat, in part thanks to biblical influence; much of the Bible had been written when various forms of paganism were still active if not dominant, so medieval clergy applied the same kinds of warnings and admonitions for any non-standard folk beliefs and practices they encountered.

The city of Ephesus purged itself of bad literature by burning magic books and became the depository of sacred literature that made up the canon of the New Testament:

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

Sigismund's army was defeated and had to retreat across the Danube, with only a few boats to ferry the troops over to safety. Zawisza's banner was guarding the retreating army. Being a man of importance, he was personally sent for by King Sigismund. Disheartened by the king's apparent cowardice, he allegedly refused to retreat, saying, "There is no boat big enough to lift my honour." He was either killed in combat or executed in Ottoman captivity.

โ€œWe cannot influence any election. Of course, the United States is a challenge today. And there are risks that probably none of us can predict,โ€ he told reporters in western Ukraine on Tuesday.

โ€œAs president of Ukraine, I must, of course, have a dialogue between my team and the Biden, Trump, and today Harris teams,โ€ Zelensky said.

โ€œWe have to have all these contacts and talk about what our future might look like if one side or the other wins the election,โ€ he said.

A global computer outage in July that stranded thousands of travelers will cost Delta Air Lines $500 million, the companyโ€™s CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC on Wednesday.

Bastian added in an interview that the carrier would seek damages for the disruptions, saying: โ€œWe have no choice.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re looking to make certain that we get compensated however they decide to, for what they cost us,โ€ he said, referring to US companies Microsoft and CrowdStrike.

CrowdStrike, the cybersecurity company that caused the outage, previously said that the breakdown stemmed from a problem in its test software.

The company said in an incident report that the glitch was pushed out to millions of computers running Microsoftโ€™s Windows software and that it will change the way it handles such updates in the future.

The incident has cost Delta โ€œhalf a billion dollarsโ€ over five days โ€” lost revenue, as well as tens of millions of dollars per day in compensation and hotels, said Bastian.

CrowdStrike said earlier this month that about 8.5 million devices were impacted by the outage, which hit a wide range of industries.

Users were faced with โ€œblue screens of deathโ€ that made rebooting impossible โ€” with the airline industry visibly impacted by the crash.

Delta, which was said to have cancelled more than 5,000 flights, was particularly affected.

According to Bastian, it had to manually reset 40,000 servers.

โ€œItโ€™s been a wakeup call for me because we have issues regularly in this space,โ€ he said.
