Sudden downdrafts are always a possibility in mountains, especially if there is unstable air from storms. Most pilots know this and make adjustments for it. But, aircraft altimeters have been know to give bad readings during downdrafts, my uncle flew into the side of a mountain at night because the altimeter said he was higher.
