On January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris will be assuming the office of Vice President of the United States. Speculations are going around that the first woman Vice President might wear the Indian traditional dress ‘saree’ on the big day.

In an interview to CNN, fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra said that it would not be a surprise if Kamala decides to wear a saree for the inauguration ball. According to him, it is important for madam VP that she uses her saree as a tool to bring people together.

Could Kamala Harris invoke her Indian heritage by wearing a sari on inauguration day?

With Donald Trump’s boycott, fears over Covid-19, the threat of armed protests and calls for violence following the siege of the Capitol, next week’s presidential inauguration is already set to be like no other.

In light of the myriad security challenges and logistical uncertainties, the question of what Kamala Harris wears on Wednesday might seem like a flippant one.

But for some in Asian American communities, the prospect of the nation’s first Black and South Asian Vice President wearing a traditional sari at any of the inauguration events – even if the celebrations are largely virtual – has offered a glimmer of positivity amid the tumult.

Mrs Kamala Devi Harris has deftly moulded her dominant African-American identity with that of her Indian background as a Tamil to create the evergreen American classic of the immigrant dream.

Born in Oakland, California, to immigrants, cancer researcher Shyamala Gopalan from India and economics professor Donald Harris from Jamaica, Mrs Harris, 55, is now a heartbeat away from the United States vice-presidency.
