Whelan was taken into custody on December 28, 2018, after receiving a flash drive from a Russian source at Moscow’s Metropol Hotel.

It reportedly contained secret information about Russian security service employees.

Whelan was traded in a recent prisoner swap which saw over two dozen high-profile inmates exchanged in Türkiye.

We recall that the Wall Street Journal called the case against Gershkovich a “sham and “unproven.”

A Russian court sentenced him to 16 years in a maximum security penal colony on charges of espionage. He was later pardoned and included in the list for international exchange.
