Miss USA Winner Alma Cooper Crowned. She’s An Army Officer
Miss USA crowned the third winner of the year Sunday, and the title went to U.S. Army Officer Alma Cooper from Michigan.
The 22-year-old title holder has a Master’s degree in data science from Stanford University, according to CNN. Cooper rose above 50 other contestants in a pageant that included a swimwear and evening gown competition.
“As the daughter of a migrant worker, a proud Afro Latina woman and an officer of the United States Army, I am living the American dream,” she told judges during the Q&A session Sunday.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.N. says it has fired nine staff members from its agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA, after an internal investigation found they may have been involved in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack against Israel.
The U.N, secretary-general’s office announced the move in a brief statement to journalists Monday. It did not elaborate on the UNRWA staffers’ likely role in the attack. It said the nine included seven staffers who were fired previously over the claims.
The U.N.’s internal watchdog has been investigating the agency since Israel in January accused 12 UNRWA staffers of being involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel in which militants killed 1,200 people and abducted some 250 others.
Israel’s allegations initially led top donor countries to suspend their funding for UNRWA, the main agency providing aid to Palestinians in Gaza amid the 10-month old war there. That caused a cash crunch of about $450 million dollars. Since then, all donor countries except for the US have decided to resume funding.
The U.N. watchdog, called the Office of Internal Oversight Services, said it drew on evidence provided by Israel in discussions with Israeli authorities. It said it could not independently corroborate that evidence since it did not have direct access to it. The investigators also reviewed internal UNRWA information, including staff records, email and other communications data.
It said it found sufficient evidence pointing to nine employees’ potential involvement in the Oct. 7 attack.
“I have decided that in the case of these remaining nine staff members, they cannot work for UNRWA,” the agency’s head Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement.
“The agency’s priority is to continue lifesaving and critical services for Palestine refugees in Gaza and across the region, especially in the face of the ongoing war, the instability and risk of regional escalation,” said Lazzarini, who also said he condemned the Oct. 7 attack.
In nine other cases, the evidence was insufficient, and in one other case there was no evidence pointing to involvement.

Supreme Court Rejects Missouri’s Lawsuit Against New York Over Trump Prosecution
The Supreme Court rejected Missouri's lawsuit against New York over the prosecution of former President Donald Trump on Monday.
Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey sued the state of New York in July, alleging its prosecution of Trump violated the First Amendment right of Missouri citizens to hear from a 2024 presidential candidate. In a brief order, the Supreme Court declined to allow Missouri to file its complaint and dismissed its motion for preliminary relief.
Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito would have allowed Missouri to file its complaint, according to the order.
“No doubt it is true that the Constitution would not have tolerated a future Confederate state gagging and sentencing Abraham Lincoln in 1860 to interfere with his campaign for the Presidency,” Missouri’s lawsuit stated. “Doing so obviously would have interfered with federal interests the same way Maryland’s attempt to tax the Bank of the United States did 40 years earlier.”
“Constitutionally, it is no different with New York’s attempt to use coercive power in the form of a gag order and impending sentence to interfere with Donald Trump’s campaign,” the lawsuit continued.

Who paid Peter Strzok off?
Peter Strzok hit the jackpot last month. The former FBI agent who opened a baseless investigation of then-candidate Donald Trump will receive $1.2 million from taxpayers, and his erstwhile paramour, former senior FBI lawyer Lisa Page, will collect $800,000.
The Department of Justice agreed to the payout in partial settlement of a lawsuit the duo never would have won, and the parts of the lawsuit alleging violations of Mr. Strzok’s free speech and due process rights remain unresolved.
The sweetheart deal raised eyebrows in Washington. At a recent hearing on the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump, FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate said he had no idea who was responsible for approving it.
Sen. John Kennedy was not satisfied with the evasive response. “Someone had to agree to it,” the Louisiana Republican said. “I’ve settled lawsuits. The client has to agree to it. You’re the client.”
According to Mr. Kennedy’s office, the FBI has not followed up with an answer to the senator’s question. It’s a particularly relevant inquiry, considering the central role Mr. Strzok and Ms. Page played in implementing the bureau’s plot against the former president.
In July 2016, Mr. Strzok opened what he called “Crossfire Hurricane,” authorizing the unprecedented spying on Mr. Trump’s campaign through an “electronic communication” that Mr. Strzok sent himself.
Self-approval kept the FBI’s upper echelon out of the paper trail; Mr. Strzok was only a midlevel executive. An attempt by Judicial Watch to reveal the higher-ups involved was rejected by a federal court in Washington.
