Indeed, last year, a Chinese Government-backed think tank in Beijing produced a report that assessed all 50 of America’s governors on their attitudes towards China. They labeled each of you “friendly,” “hardline,” or “ambiguous.”

I’ll let you decide where you think you belong. Someone in China already has. Many of you, indeed, in that report are referenced by name.

So here’s the lesson: The lesson is that competition with China is not just a federal issue. It’s why I wanted to be here today, Governor Hogan. It’s happening in your states with consequences for our foreign policy, for the citizens that reside in your states, and indeed, for each of you.

And, in fact, whether you are viewed by the CCP as friendly or hardline, know that it’s working you, know that it’s working the team around you.

Competition with China is happening inside of your state, and it affects our capacity to perform America’s vital national security functions.”

Back then, Mr Walz spent a year teaching at the Foshan No 1 High School under a Harvard University volunteer programme.

When he returned to the US, he told a local newspaper that there were "no limits" on what the Chinese could accomplish "if they had proper leadership".

"They are such kind, generous, capable people," he said.

Mr Walz and his wife were married on 4 June 1994 - the fifth anniversary of the Tiananmen uprising. She said in an interview that "he wanted to have a date he'll always remember".

The couple then started a business which organised summer educational trips to China for US students.

There hasn't been much official reaction yet from the Republicans to Mr Walz's time in China.

But some allies of Trump have said Mr Walz's nomination would be welcomed in China, although Beijing has not commented on it.

"Communist China is very happy with @GovTimWalz as Kamala’s VP pick," Richard Grenell, a former acting director of National Intelligence in the previous Trump administration, said on X.

"No one is more pro-China than Marxist Walz," he added.

While China appears to be a personal issue for Walz, that’s only good “to a point” and doesn’t reflect the “zero-sum competition” between the US and China, said Michael Sobolik, a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council and author of Countering China’s Great Game: A Strategy for American Dominance.

“The Chinese people aren’t Americans’ enemies, and Walz understands that basic reality — on the other hand, Walz seems overly optimistic, almost Pollyannish, about Washington’s struggle with the Chinese Communist Party,” Sobolik said. “Like President Biden and Vice President Harris, Walz seems to reject a cold war framing for US-China relations. That’s a bad thing.”
