Tuesday's Missouri primary delivered the latest demonstration of the Israel lobby's formidable power, as progressive Democratic "Squad" Rep. Cori Bush lost a primary challenge to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, who benefitted from huge spending on his behalf by pro-Israel groups.

It's the Israel lobby's second ouster of a Squad member in just six weeks. In June, New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman lost the Democratic nomination to Westchester County executive George Latimer. In that race, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) poured an astonishing $14 million into the race – helping to make it the most expensive House primary contest ever.

Not far behind, the Bell-Bush contest ended as the fourth-priciest such race in US history. The AIPAC-affiliated but opaquely-named United Democracy Project spent almost $9 million to ensure that Bush was removed from Congress. Democratic Majority for Israel chipped in almost $500,000. It paid off: With more than 95% of the votes counted, Bell had won 51.2% of the vote to Bush's 45.6%. The district is deep blue, so you can go ahead and pencil Bell in the seat now.

Bush and Bowman have been among the most vocal critics of the Israeli government's response to the Oct. 7 Hamas invasion of southern Israel. The campaign in Gaza has killed an estimated 39,000 people, with most of them said to be civilians. About 90% of the population has been internally displaced at least once, with some moving 10 times, per the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Using satellite imagery, US university researchers estimate that, through April 21, 57% of all buildings in Gaza had been damaged or destroyed.

The military is further sending assistance to the Kursk region, which lies over 300 miles from Moscow.

Russian state media has detailed that the cross-border assault began at 5:30am Tuesday morning and involved in initial wave of up to 1,000 militants. Kremlin sources further say that the Ukrainian side suffered at least 315 casualties, including at least 100 killed and 215 wounded.

The chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, in a briefing given to Putin said the goal of the Ukrainian operation was to take over the Sudzhinsky district of Kursk Region.

Donald Lu was US Ambassador to Albania (2015-2018) and Kyrgyzstan (2018-2021), where he was accused of interfering in the politics of other countries, as Pakistan Today reports. In Albania, Lu was accused of threatening Attorney General Adriatik Llalla, who wrote to the Albanian President to complain of the US ambassador’s “brash behavior”

Donald Lu was also apparently involved in the 2015 color revolution in Macedonia that brought down conservative Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski together with Victoria Nuland.

He was promoted the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs by the Biden administration in September 2021. After the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in Feb 2022, Lu traveled to Bangladesh and India with Undersecretary of State to put those countries under pressure to turn their backs on Russia.

Lu returned to Bangladesh in 2023 and May 2024, promising the US “respects Bangladesh’s sovereignty” in the face of accusations by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that a “white-skinned” foreign country wants to install an airbase in Bangladesh and is “conspiring against her government after being rejected.”

Pfluger said that cloud-based technology has given "terrorist groups even more tools to use in their pursuit of deadly chaos" more than 20 years since the 9/11 attacks.

“Foreign-controlled apps like TikTok and encrypted messaging platforms like Telegram have shined a disturbing light on the lengths America’s enemies will go to attack our way of life and radicalize young minds with violent extremist ideology, as well as the terrifying potency of their grotesque messages when disseminated on platforms with almost unlimited reach," he said in a statement.

"Considering the heightened threat landscape created by terrorist organizations around the world, especially as we’ve seen just last October with the devastating terrorist attack in Israel, DHS must take steps to assess and address this threat before it’s too late," Pfluger added.

Panetta said that "advancements in foreign cloud-based messaging" present new challenges in fighting terrorism.

"This bipartisan legislation would ensure the Department of Homeland Security is properly monitoring these vulnerabilities and assessing the threats they pose to our national security," he said. "Better understanding how terrorist networks communicate is essential to stopping future attacks."

Israel's Knesset Constitution Committee convened on Wednesday for a debate on sanctions by foreign countries against Israeli civilians, nearly all of them due to accusations of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

According to a document prepared for the committee by the Knesset's research center, states that slapped sanctions on Israeli individuals and groups include the US, the European Union, Britain, France, Canada, and New Zealand. The sanctions were applied to a number of civilians accused of attacking Palestinians or damaging their property, a number of outposts and farms in the West Bank from wshich attacks were allegedly launched, and a number of groups, including Lehava, Tzav 9 (which attempted to block humanitarian aid from entering Gaza), and more.

Israeli journalist Barak Ravid reported in July that the US had even considered sanctioning ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

Committee chairman MK Simcha Rothman said at the start of the meeting that the sanctions were a "violation of [Israeli] sovereignty in the most basic sense," as well as "a step that also harms the judicial system by expressing foreign states' lack of trust in the system and in legal processes." According to Rothman, accusations of "violent settlers" was a "modern blood libel." Rothman argued that the fact that sanctions were also slapped on Tzav 9 revealed that the US was interested in sanctioning anyone who it viewed as a threat to the two-state solution. This would include nearly all of Israel's Jews, as a recent vote in the Knesset rejecting Palestinian statehood passed with a significant majority, and without any no objections from Jewish Members of Knesset, Rothman pointed out.

Israel Tests Syrian Air Defenses Amid Rising Tensions

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) engaged early on August 7 at least four Israeli aerial objects over the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that SAA troops in al-Jabiyah hill and Umm Hawran hill launched flares and engaged the objects, which were described by the London-based monitoring group as drones, using anti-aircraft guns. No anti-aircraft missiles were fired however. It’s unclear yet if any of the objects was shot down.

These objects, either small reconnaissance drones or decoys, were likely launched by the Israeli military to test and try to locate Syrian air defenses in the southern region. This happened before large-scale Israeli aerial attacks on several occasions in the past.

The unusual engagement came as Israel is preparing for for a possible response to its recent strikes on the Houthi-held Yemeni Red Sea port of al-Hodeida, the assassinations of Hezbollah’s military chief Fuad Shukr in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and Hamas’s leader Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Last April, Iran launched large-scale missile and drone attacks against Israel in response to a deadly strike that hit its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The Israeli military responded by launching an aerial attack against Iran later in the same month. During the attack, strikes hit air defense sites in southern Syria, including one in Daraa.

Israel has already vowed to attack Iran again if it went on with its plans to launch another missile and drone strike along with its allies. The Israeli military may be testing Syrian air defenses in order to prepare for such an attack.
