The U.S. has officially handed over its last military bases in Niger to the Nigerien authorities, marking the end of a significant counterterrorism mission in the region.

This handover was finalized on August 5, 2024, with the transfer of Airbase 201 in Agadez, following the earlier withdrawal from Airbase 101 in Niamey. The departure comes after Niger’s military junta terminated the agreement that allowed U.S. troops to operate in the country in March 2024.

In 2023, the Niger military junta overthrew the democratically elected president. This coup led to the deterioration of relations between Niger and its Western allies, including the United States.

The junta’s decision to end the agreement permitting U.S. military operations was influenced by their desire to pivot towards other international alliances, particularly with Russia. The suit alleges X was targeted with an illegal ad boycott.

The lawsuit was filed against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, its parent firm, World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), and GARM members CVS Health, Mars, Orsted, and Unilever, who reportedly controls a staggering 90% of marketing efforts worldwide.

Soon after Elon Musk’s announcement, Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski announced he was joining the lawsuit with Elon Musk against the GARM cartel.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its first-ever “mega earthquake caution” on Thursday, following a magnitude 7.1 temblor that struck earlier in the day off the coast of Kyushu, the country’s third largest island. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at around 4:43 pm local time (07:43 GMT) off the coast of the Miyazaki prefecture of Kyushu, at a depth of about 18 miles, triggering tsunami advisories, the JMA said.

Seismologists reportedly held an emergency meeting to analyze whether the quake had impacted the nearby Nankai Trough, where it has long been feared that a massive earthquake could cause hundreds of thousands of deaths. Large earthquakes have taken place every 100 to 150 years in central and western parts of Japan, the agency said.

According to Japan Forward, the government predicts a megaquake at the Nankai Trough within the next 30 years with 70-80% probability.

After the Thursday temblor, the JMA said that the “possibility of a large-scale earthquake is considered to be relatively higher than under normal conditions.” It urged residents to be on higher alert for the next week. Continue…
