“We have said from the very beginning, if somebody is presenting us a scientifically solid system how to identify men and women, we are the first ones to do it,” Bach said. “We do not like this uncertainty. We do not like it for the overall situation for nobody.

Bahabelom Baraki, age 29, Biniam Gebremichael, age 29, and Kokob Nguse, age 26, have been charged by police with tobacco trafficking, fraud over $5,000, possession for the purpose of weapons trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The three owners are also facing six charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The individual, a man in his fifties, was arrested this spring following an investigation that began at least two years ago.

Swiss authorities, after monitoring his frequent travels to China where he worked as an environmental consultant, suspected him of conducting political, economic, and military intelligence on behalf of the Chinese government.

The investigation, launched by the Swiss Attorney General’s office on March 14, 2023, remains ongoing.

Swiss authorities have not released the name of the individual, and no formal charges have been announced.

The Swiss Attorney General’s office emphasized the importance of maintaining secrecy in espionage investigations.

Last year multiple Canadian bureaucrats were stripped of their security clearances after allegedly spying on behalf of foreign powers.

Early Wednesday morning, the Victoria police arrested a man who smashed the front door of a restaurant with a rock. He was arrested and released on bail, with the condition that he would not return to the business. About six hours later, on the same day, the police responded to a report of a smoke grenade being thrown inside the same restaurant.

“Through the investigation, officers believed the same suspect was responsible for both offences. As a result, he was located and arrested a second time, in the 2900-Block of Douglas Street just after 9:15 a.m. this morning. Canada’s economy lost a net 2,800 jobs last month and the country’s unemployment rate remained at a 30-month high of 6.4%, largely due to low labour participation and rapid population growth.

While analysts had predicted the unemployment rate to increase from 6.3% to 6.5% in June, due to Canada’s population growth outpacing the job market, they also forecast a net gain of 22,500 new jobs, however, that was not the case.

Excluding the pandemic, the participation rate of Canada’s labour force dropped to a 26-year low of 65% last month, reflecting that a large cohort of people in Canada are not looking for work.

Protesters from “Occupy UofT” helped stage a “sit-in” style protest at 777 Bay St. at College Park in Toronto, an office building which houses the university’s Asset Management Corporation’s offices, to “raise awareness” of the university’s alleged financial backing of the Israeli military.

The protest group shared on Instagram that they were involved in the sit-in, which began at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday in the lobby outside the elevators of the UofT offices. Within 20 minutes, “dozens” of police assembled inside the building, according to the protesters.

“The Toronto Police Service, acting on behalf of the building’s property managers, served us a trespass notice which they were eager to violently enforce,” the group posted on Instagram. Continue…

Canada on track to surpass 500K new permanent residents this year

Following two months of immigration growth, Canada saw its number of new permanent residents soften by 4.9% in June, according to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

A total of 34,870 new permanent residents came to Canada in March and 42,595 foreign nationals were granted permanent residency in April.

Permanent residents grew by another 46,835 in May before June saw monthly immigration dip slightly, with the total number of new permanent residents dropping to 44,540.

According to the IRCC data, the total number of new permanent residents in Canada could reach 511,410 by 2024, should the trend continue until the end of this year.

That would mean an 8.4% increase in new permanent residents than last year, which saw Canada bring in 471,815, a record-breaking year for the country’s immigration levels.

The projections would also indicate that Canada will receive 5.4% more than what the Trudeau government has said it would, exceeding its target of 485,000 under the Liberals’ 2024-26 Immigration Levels Plan.

The total number could even surpass the previous 500,000 targets for next year and 2026. Continue…

A recent study shows that the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) disproportionately suppresses conservative media content and elevates left-leaning voices despite owner Elon Musk’s pledge in May to “investigate” this bias.

Media Research Center (MRC) published on Friday the results of a study into how content on X is boosted and suppressed. Remarkably, MRC found that nearly 74 percent of the right-leaning media outlets it reviewed were de-boosted, with considerably lower scores than left-leaning outlets.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, on Saturday to march against the restart of a controversial lithium mining project. The country’s authorities have claimed that the protests are intended as a Maidan-style coup against the government.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said a day earlier that Moscow had warned Belgrade about a potential coup attempt, noting that Serbia’s Security Intelligence Agency (BIA) was already acting on leads provided by Russia.

Commenting on the rally, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin, the former head of the intelligence services, claimed that the protest is “moving in accordance with a Maidan scenario,” referring to the Western-backed coup in Kiev in 2013-14 in which then-President Viktor Yanukovich was overthrown.

UK doctors ordered to ask men if they’re pregnant

The NHS reportedly issued the new guidance after an expecting transgender person had a CT scan, which could endanger the fetus

British health authorities have instructed doctors performing X-ray, CT and MRI scans to ask men whether they are pregnant.

The “inclusive pregnancy status guidelines for ionizing radiation” were developed by the Society of Radiographers (SoR). According to The Telegraph, the guidance came in response to an incident in which a transgender man had a CT scan while pregnant. The decision was justified by the fact that the radiation from X-ray, CT and MRI scans can be harmful to unborn babies.

Doctors have therefore been told not to assume the gender identity of patients when performing all such procedures and inquiring of all people between the ages of 12 and 55 about pregnancy, including men, transgender, non-binary, and intersex patients. Continue…
