“Big city mayors” are calling on the federal and provincial governments to provide a concrete action plan to tackle the rising homelessness, drug addiction and overdose crisis facing many cities across the country.

The coalition of Ontario Mayor’s launched its “Solve the Crisis” campaign Wednesday. The mayors are asking for funding from other levels of government for a five-pronged plan they believe will help alleviate the “humanitarian crisis” facing their cities.

Mayors from 30 different cities with a population greater than 100,000 make up the organization.

“There is no reason why anyone should be dying in the streets of this country, given the wealth and the resources and the expertise that we have,” Marianne Meed Ward, OBCM’s chair and the mayor of Burlington, said in Toronto Thursday. “The crisis is growing, and it impacts every single municipality across our province, large and small, rural and urban. It affects our residents, our businesses, and our local governments, and we need solutions now.”

The mayors say they are grateful for the “piecemeal” funding announcements they receive from the other levels of government but that it’s insufficient for the scope of the problem. They are asking for a consistent, fixed and certain amount municipalities can use for various social programs and housing they believe are necessary to tackle the crisis.

They are asking for the province to appoint one minister with enough power and authority to be the single point of contact for all the ministries involved in tackling the issue.

Meed Ward said that having a single minister in charge of crises would be more efficient than having multiple ministers with intersecting responsibilities in the “spectrum of issues.” Continue…

Being legally required to step down as partner when he took office in 2021, Boissonnault remained a 50% shareholder in the company until recently, as Ministers are permitted to own stakes in private companies.

However, the latest string of text messages were from 2022, making it increasingly difficult for the Edmonton Centre MP to distance himself from the company which he claimed to have left upon being elected.

Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein wrote a letter to Boissonnault on Wednesday saying he was “concerned” about new text messages.

“In his sermon, Imam Abyat glorified martyrdom through violence, made hateful accusations, and called for the annihilation of Jews and Christians. This kind of hate speech and incitement is unacceptable and has no place in our society,” said B’nai Brith Canada.

B’nai Brith said that they contacted the RCMP and informed them this could be a breach of Section 319 (2) of the Criminal Code, the wilful promotion of hatred, which carries a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment.

A freedom of information request by CTV News found that police spent an extra $44,555 on security-related overtime during the brief visit.

According to an August 6 press release, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) announced it has launched a constitutional challenge on behalf of Ontario resident George Katerberg after the Ontario Ministry of Transportation refused to allow him to display a billboard demanding that politicians be held accountable for their mishandling of COVID.

“Mr. Katerberg’s proposed sign was a matter of legitimate expression protected by the Charter,” JCCF lawyer Chris Fleury stated. “In a functioning democracy, individuals like Mr. Katerberg need to be able to express their dissatisfaction with public officials.”

“Doing so is not promoting hatred,” he argued. “Mr. Katerberg is looking forward to his day in Court and to eventually being able to erect his billboard.”

$5 million in ‘black money’ seized from Ukrainian army food supplier

Ukrainian law enforcement officials have seized more than $5 million from a company supplying food to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as part of an inquiry into a suspected tax-evasion scheme, the nation’s Economic Security Bureau (BEB) reported on Friday.

Stacks of cash were found in the company accountant’s car when it was intercepted by security officials in Kiev Region. The BEB also reported that she sought to hide a “black cash register” and to conceal the firm’s illicit operations during the investigation.

The authorities published photos of the woman’s car trunk filled with numerous bundles of euro banknotes. According to BEB, the seized sum amounted to €4.7 million ($5.13 million). Searches were also conducted at the firm’s premises and in the apartments of some of its staff members.

The BEB did not name the company in question but said that it provided food supplies to the Ukrainian military under Defense Ministry contracts. Between 2022 and 2023, the company delivered food products to the Defense Ministry worth 14.5 billion hryvnia ($352 million), the bureau said. Continue…
