Elbit systems will supply Iron Fist Active Protection Systems (APS) to BAE Systems Hägglunds.

Elbit Systems announced on Thursday that it secured a contract worth $130 million to supply Iron Fist Active Protection Systems (APS) to BAE Systems Hägglunds.

The APS will be installed on CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) over a five-and-a-half year period.

The APS is an advanced version of the Hard Kill system, which enhanced the self-defense capabilities of armored platforms against modern battlefield threats. It protects from a wide variety of threats, specifically Anti-tank Rockets, Anti-tank Guided Missiles, UAS, and Loitering threats in both open and complex urban terrains.

More Israeli Strikes Hit Lebanon Overnight (Videos)

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on August 8 that it carried out overnight a series of strikes against Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

The strikes hit targets of the group in the towns of Bint Jbeil, Majdal Zoun and Doueir in southern Lebanon, according to the military, which also released video footage. The strikes caused material losses, but no casualties were reported by Lebanese media.

In the afternoon of August 8, an Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle between the southern Lebanese towns of Yarine and Jebbayn. Casualties were reported by Lebanese media this time. Such strikes usually target senior members of Hezbollah or its allies.

Hezbollah didn’t mourn any of its members. However, it announced an attack against the IDF’s al-Marj site on the border with Lebanon.

In a statement, the group said it struck a gathering of Israeli troops in al-Marj with a suicide drone “in support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to support their valiant and honorable resistance.” No losses were reported by Hebrew media, however.

The clashes between Israel and Hezbollah broke out after the start of the war in Gaza last October, with the group and its allies launching near-daily attacks in support of the Hamas Movement and other factions in the Strip.

So far, the border clashes have resulted in 25 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 18 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 600 people have been killed, including 381 fighters of Hezbollah and over 100 civilians.

The 'Sentinel' ICBM is the latest boondoggle to avoid cancellation due to massive industry investment in the right places

The Pentagon is in the midst of a massive $2 trillion multiyear plan to build a new generation of nuclear-armed missiles, bombers, and submarines. A large chunk of that funding will go to major nuclear weapons contractors like Bechtel, General Dynamics, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman. And they will do everything in their power to keep that money flowing.

This January, a review of the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program under the Nunn-McCurdy Act — a congressional provision designed to rein in cost overruns of Pentagon weapons programs — found that the missile, the crown jewel of the nuclear overhaul plan involving 450 missile-holding silos spread across five states, is already 81% over its original budget. It is now estimated that it will cost a total of nearly $141 billion to develop and purchase, a figure only likely to rise in the future.

That Pentagon review had the option of canceling the Sentinel program because of such a staggering cost increase. Instead, it doubled down on the program, asserting that it would be an essential element of any future nuclear deterrent and must continue, even if the funding for other defense programs has to be cut to make way for it. In justifying the decision, Deputy Defense Secretary William LaPlante stated: “We are fully aware of the costs, but we are also aware of the risks of not modernizing our nuclear forces and not addressing the very real threats we confront.”

Cost is indeed one significant issue, but the biggest risk to the rest of us comes from continuing to build and deploy ICBMs, rather than delaying or shelving the Sentinel program. As former Secretary of Defense William Perry has noted, ICBMs are “some of the most dangerous weapons in the world” because they “could trigger an accidental nuclear war.” As he explained, a president warned (accurately or not) of an enemy nuclear attack would have only minutes to decide whether to launch such ICBMs and conceivably devastate the planet.

Possessing such potentially world-ending systems only increases the possibility of an unintended nuclear conflict prompted by a false alarm. And as Norman Solomon and the late Daniel Ellsberg once wrote, “If reducing the dangers of nuclear war is a goal, the top priority should be to remove the triad’s ground-based leg — not modernize it.”

This is no small matter. It is believed that a large-scale nuclear exchange could result in more than five billion of us humans dying, once the possibility of a “nuclear winter” and the potential destruction of agriculture across much of the planet is taken into account, according to an analysis by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.

Strong earthquake strikes off Japan's southern island Kyushu, triggering tsunami alert

A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Japan's southern island of Kyushu on Thursday afternoon at a depth of 30 kilometres.

Authorities have issued a tsunami advisory for the south and east coasts of Kyushu and Shikoku, predicting waves of up to 1 metre.

A powerful earthquake has struck off Japan's southern coast, triggering a tsunami advisory.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the quake on Thursday afternoon registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.9, but was later upgraded to 7.1.

Its epicentre was observed in the Hyuganada Sea, off the eastern coast of Japan's southern main island Kyushu, at a depth of about 30 kilometres.

The JMA initially issued the tsunami alert for the prefectures of Miyazaki, Kochi, Oita, Kagoshima and Ehime coastal areas, predicting waves of up to 1 metre.

It later lifted the warning for the latter four.

The JMA said tsunami waves of up 50cm were detected along Miyazaki and the nearby island of Shikoku about a half hour after the quake struck.

There were reports of broken windows at the Miyazaki Airport near the epicentre, according to public broadcaster NHK. The airport's runway was temporarily closed for a safety check and flights suspended.

In Osaki in neighbouring Kagoshima prefecture, concrete walls collapsed and a wooden house was damaged but no injuries were reported.

Authorities in the UK are now arresting people for posting “inaccurate information” on social media, according to a new report.

Sky News reports that a woman has been arrested by Cheshire Police for posting “inaccurate information on social media” about the attacker who stabbed three girls to death in Southport last week.

The 55-year-old woman was arrested near the northern town of Chester on “suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred and false communications.”

Chief Superintendent Allison Ross gave a statement explaining how the post is alleged to have “fueled” the protests and riots in the UK over the last week, which she asserts started as a result of “malicious and inaccurate communications online.”
