Ex-German foreign minister: Trump wants 'regime change' in Berlin

Berlin (dpa) - Donald Trump is pushing for "regime change" in Berlin, former German foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel told local media Thursday, responding to the US president's recent vitriolic remarks directed at Germany over defence spending and immigration.

"America under Trump cannot be relied upon," Gabriel told the Spiegel weekly. "Trump is giving the North Korean dictator (leader Kim Jong Un) a survival guarantee and wants regime change in Germany at the same time."

"We can't stand for this," Gabriel said, calling on Germany to take a stronger stance towards Trump. "We can no longer have any illusions. Donald Trump only knows strength. So we have to show him that we are strong too."

Ahead of this week's NATO summit, Trump argued that Germany was not meeting its NATO defence expenditure pledges.

Last month, he tweeted that "the people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous coalition," and described Europe's decision to allow millions of migrants to enter as a "big mistake."

Gabriel, the former leader of Germany's Social Democrats (SPD), said that Germany needed to issue "clear, firm, and above all, unified European responses to Trump."

"Every step to accommodate him, every attempt to please, only leads to him to take a further step. This needs to end."

Gabriel named refugee expenditure as an area where Europe could push back.

"If he demands billions of dollars for US military expenses, then we have to demand the return of billions spent on refugees that were created by failed US military intervention in Iraq."
