Not only that but interpret the rules in the most literal and restrictive way possible. FORCE your interpretation on the group by repeating it over and over.

True enough. But that applies to individuals within a group. Groups are something else. Open groups are vulnerable to manipulation. Certain ideas - like "nobody is better that another" - are popular. This easily becomes "nobody should stand out from another." You know - like in communism.
Look at Trump, a total individual with no inhibitions about displaying that individuality. That's what makes him different.
