DOD defies order to clean up 'forever chemicals' in Arizona

On top of that, the Pentagon is still using a fire suppressant with potential to further contaminate drinking water on bases

In Dr. Strangelove, the fictitious base commander Jack D. Ripper orders a first-strike nuclear attack on the Soviet Union to enact revenge for contaminating American water to “impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.” The satirical film poked fun at rampant Cold War conspiracy theories about fluoridating our water supply. But as it turns out, America’s water was being contaminated — not by the Russians, but by the Pentagon.

Not long after American audiences packed into theaters to watch the bleak Cold War comedy, the Department of Defense ramped up its use of a fire suppressant called AFFF, knowingly contaminating the drinking water of millions of Americans.

Now, the Department of Defense is refusing to take accountability.

This week, the Air Force claimed it has no legal obligation to comply with an order from the Environmental Protection Agency in May to abate the threat of “forever chemicals” to the drinking water of Tucson, Arizona. The EPA order required the Air Force to create a system designed to treat high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — synthetic chemicals known as PFAS that are linked to weakened immunity and other health risks — in drinking water, estimated to cost $25 million.

Testing at the Tucson International Airport Area Superfund Site has revealed PFAS levels of up to 5,300 times beyond the drinkable limit, which is “likely to enter into the Tucson public water system,” according to the EPA. These chemicals likely originated from the use of AFFF at airports and military sites, such as nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and Morris Air National Guard Base.

The EPA also identified other chemicals that migrated into the groundwater from a weapons manufacturing facility just south of Tucson operated by RTX (formerly known as Raytheon).

The Air Force is hoping to evade the EPA’s directive by citing the Supreme Court’s overturning in June of the Chevron Doctrine, a longstanding legal doctrine that gave deference to regulatory agencies in interpreting gray areas in the law. But, according to critics of the Air Force’s maneuver, the enforcement of rules adopted by these agencies, as opposed to the interpretation of the rules themselves, was not covered by the Court’s decision.

Deborah Ann Sivas, director of the Stanford University Environmental Law Clinic, told the Guardian that “the Air Force is essentially attempting to expand the scope of the court’s ruling to thwart regulatory orders not covered by the decision.” The EPA noted in its May order that non-compliance could incur a civil penalty of nearly $30,000 a day, as well as civil lawsuits by private citizens.

Western Battle Tanks Are Invading Russia: Sky News

In a first which hasn't been witnessed since World War 2, Western battle tanks have been operating inside Russian territory. Sky News is reporting Thursday that Ukrainian troops have used British Challenger 2 tanks during the ongoing cross-border offensive in Russia's Kursk region.

"While the UK and Ukraine governments remain tight-lipped on operational details, a source has signaled British tanks have crossed into Russia for Ukraine's Kursk offensive," the publication writes.

"According to government policy, the UK has confirmed Ukraine is free to use British weapons on Russian territory," Sky News reports. "A source said this included Challenger 2 tanks and signaled that they had been used during the Ukrainian incursion, which began on 6 August."

Sky News continues, "Details on how and when Ukrainian forces deployed Challenger 2 tanks within the Russian region of Kursk were not immediately clear. Neither was the number of tanks that may have been involved."

If confirmed, this certainly marks one of the single biggest escalations of the war and suggests that French, German, or American tanks might also cross the border into Russia. Already the Russian side has confirmed that its aerial forces took out Bradley Fighting Vehicles during the Kursk raid, which has been unfolding for more than a week.

The US has been among a few countries which have greenlighted Kiev forces' ability to use Western weapons to strike positions inside Russia, but only those areas from which strikes on Ukraine are launched.

The White House and Western allies have been vocal in supporting the Kursk operation, but the US claims it did not have foreknowledge of the invasion. President Biden on Tuesday told reporters, "I’ve spoken with my staff on a regular basis probably every four or five hours for the last six or eight days."

He said that "it’s creating a real dilemma for Putin. And we’ve been in direct contact — constant contact with — with the Ukrainians."

Russian Telegram channels have since picked up on unverified video purporting to show a Challenger 2 tank in Kursk…

Tony Blair’s wife to represent Russian tycoon in $16bn case – Vedomosti

Cherie Blair is reportedly part of a legal team handling sanctioned Mikhail Fridman’s claim against Luxembourg

Cherie Blair, the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, is representing sanctioned Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman in his legal battle with Luxembourg over frozen assets, Vedomosti reports.

Blair is acting on the businessman’s behalf in a lawsuit over the state’s decision to freeze his assets in wake of EU sanctions against him, the Russian newspaper reported, citing legal documents.

The founder of Alfa Group, one of Russia’s largest privately owned investment consortiums, filed an international arbitration lawsuit against Luxembourg on Tuesday seeking almost €15 billion ($16 billion) in compensation. He claimed he had suffered permanent losses after Luxembourg implemented the EU’s “spurious and unfounded” sanctions against him.

According to the billionaire, the introduction of sanctions against him was solely due to his Russian citizenship and business success; he condemned the move as a “grave injustice” and a violation of international law.

In the lawsuit, Fridman reportedly argued that Luxembourg’s actions breached a 1989 treaty signed between the Soviet Union and Belgium which protects investors’ assets from expropriation, nationalization or “any other measures having similar effects.”

The 60-year-old was sanctioned by the UK, the EU, and Canada in 2022, and by the US in 2023. He successfully sued the EU over his inclusion in the sanctions list and was removed from it in April.

The billionaire businessman holds Russian and Israeli citizenship, and had lived in London before moving to Israel in early October. Fridman, who in 2003 was pictured with then-Prime Minister Tony Blair while signing a deal with energy giant BP, has described life in Britain under sanctions as “impossible,” claiming that British authorities have refused to allow him to pay for the upkeep of his London mansion and his staff’s wages.

The businessman arrived in Israel just a few days before the militant group Hamas launched its October 7 surprise attack on the country. Fridman subsequently fled to Moscow, telling Bloomberg that he planned to “return to Israel and live there permanently” once the situation has calmed down.
