EXCLUSIVE: Harris Campaign Attempts To Mask Its Own Retreat With Outright Lie About Debates

REAGAN REESE August 16, 2024

The Trump campaign said Friday that the Kamala Harris campaign lied when it claimed the two sides reached a debate agreement a day prior.

After former President Donald Trump announced that he proposed three presidential debates, the Harris campaign released a statement Thursday claiming that Trump had “accepted our proposal for three debates — two presidential and a vice presidential debate.” National Press Secretary for the Trump campaign, Karoline Leavitt, told the Daily Callerthat the statement was a lie, and the former president will be on the debate stage for his three proposed events, in addition to two VP matchups.

“Let’s be clear: President Trump will be on the debate stage THREE times with Fox News, ABC and NBC/Telemundo. Likewise, Senator Vance will show up to debate Tim Walz on TWO occasions, on September 18 with CNN and October 1 with CBS. If Harris and Walz don’t show up, an empty podium can stand in their place, proving to the American people just how weak they are,” Leavitt continued.

In its Thursday statement, the Harris campaign wrote that if Trump shows up to a Sept. 10 debate, then Americans “will have another opportunity to see the vice president and Donald Trump on the debate stage in October.” Leavitt told the Caller that there has not been a proposed October debate discussed, despite the Harris campaign’s statement.

“There’s been no proposal from a network for an October debate. They’re just throwing that out there needlessly,”Leavitt told the Caller. “President Trump committed to three debates. Kamala should commit to the same three debates. We both, both campaigns, received the exact same debate invitations from those three networks,” she added.

The Harris campaign began its statement by claiming “the debate about debates is over.” Leavitt indicated that is far from the truth.

“Harris’s advisors do not trust her competence and skills to debate President Trump. So they are trying to get away with seeing how she performs on the September debate, and then maybe they’ll commit to an October debate. That’s not how this works,” Leavitt told the Caller.

“Kamala Harris is a COWARD. She refuses to do a press conference, refuses to take a sit-down interview, and refuses to accept the three debate invitations agreed to by President Trump. Harris won’t speak unscripted because she can’t defend her dangerously liberal record and failed four years in the White House,” Leavitt said.

The saga between the Trump campaign and their Democratic opponents over when and where to debate has dragged on for months. Both sides agreed early on to abandon the typical process of working with the Commission on Presidential Debates to set up the contests, leading to the two campaigns to have to negotiate with each other, and television networks, on the time and place they would occur.

After not debating during the Republican presidential primary, Trump openly challenged President Joe Biden to debate numerous times before Biden finally accepted a matchup for June. The decision proved fatal for the Biden campaign — his performance was so widely panned that it resulted in fellow Democrats forcing him out of the presidential race.

Biden and Trump had agreed previously to a second debate in September, but once Biden was replaced with Vice President Harris, the Trump camp contended that agreement was null and void. Since then, the two sides have been locked in a back-and-forth on how many debates there will be, which networks will host them, and when they will take place.

Part of the back-and-forth surrounded the vice presidential debates. CBS News proposed four potential dates for vice presidential debates. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz committed to an Oct. 1 debate, but Senator J.D. Vance later accepted both the Oct. 1 debate and an additional Sept. 18 debate on CNN.

The only debate both sides have locked in without a doubt is the Sept. 10 debate on ABC News. The Harris campaign seemingly wants to push the second debate to October, after which many Americans will already have been able to vote early, in some states for weeks.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: The Weird, Creepy, Surreal — And Dangerous — 2024 Campaign

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON, CONTRIBUTOR August 15, 20245:19 PM ET1/2

The already-long 2024 presidential campaign has become the strangest in modern history.

Here are 10 unanswered questions that illustrate how and why we’ve entered this bizarro world:

  1. How can Kamala Harris merely promise us fixes to come in 2025 for inflation and an open border when she is still vice president for another six months? Why can’t she enact her proposed solutions to these problems (which she helped create) right now?

  1. Would the media prefer to help her win but lose further credibility themselves by failing to ask why she has disowned her last three decades of leftist agendas, or to reclaim some of their reputations and thereby risk her losing?

  1. Does the left appreciate the new campaign and election protocols it has now established?

That is to say:

• Cancel by fiat their virtual nominee four months before the election when he sinks in the polls?

• Nullify the outcome of a year of primaries and the will of 14 million voters?

• Threaten a sitting president with removal by the 25th Amendment process unless he steps aside as his party nominee?

• Anoint a replacement nominee before the convention and without a single primary — and then prevent any rival candidates from challenging her?

  1. After the precedents of 2020 and 2024, is the future orthodox protocol for any Democratic nominee now to avoid all interviews and extempore speaking, and stick to teleprompted speeches and scripted responses only?

Is the fear that a transparent progressive messenger with an overt and honest left-wing message will double down on it and thus guarantee defeat?

  1. For the next 80 days, has the chameleon-like Harris now become a temporary MAGA candidate, as she expropriates former President Donald Trump’s positions from border security to no taxes on tips? Does the media care to ask the new 80-day MAGA Harris why she has renounced many of her once emphatic beliefs?

  1. If Democratic presidential reelection candidate Joe Biden was pronounced fit as a fiddle before June 27, but after July 21 was abruptly forced off the ticket as too debilitated to continue as his party’s nominee, what exactly is his status now?

(Half-cognizant and thusable enough to continue his not-so-important task as America’s president, but also half-enfeebled and thus utterly unable to continue as the far more important Democratic nominee, it appears.)

  1. Does the new antisemitic Democratic Party prefer to risk losing with the radical nonentity WASP Tim Walz as vice presidential candidate rather than likely win with a popular, successful and moderate Jewish Josh Shapiro?

2/2

  1. If one vice presidential candidate went to a war zone to serve with his deployed unit, while his counterpart preferred to retire from the military to avoid doing the same and lies about his abdication, how can the media credibly assert that the former’s tour was militarily suspect and yet pronounce the latter’s absence as heroic?

  1. If the current president canceled his reelection bid because he was too debilitated and unpopular, and is now rarely seen or heard, and if the vice president is out of Washington running a campaign in his place, but avoiding all press conferences, interviews and unscripted addresses, who exactly, if anyone, is running the United States for the next six months of the lame duck Biden-Harris administration?

  1. If Trump all summer has been compared by his enemies to Hitler and his murderous Third Reich, and if a 20-year-old would-be assassin and murderer with ease took up a sniper’s position to kill Trump — without a notified Secret Service or other law enforcement attempting to abort the shooter’s attempted assassination — ==what signal does that send to other would-be assassins for the next 80 days of the 2024 campaign?

Is the message that if a 20-year-old amateur sniper can brazenlyand visibly for nearly an hour breach all Secret Service security perimeters to shoot eight times at the president, hit him in the ear, kill one innocent bystander and wound two others, then almost any future, more-experienced serious shooter could match or exceed the ability of that disturbed amateur to get close enough to Trump to fire more than eight shots at his head?

And that shooting Trump in many leftist quarters would subsequently earn the unhinged killer eternal fame, applause and immortality?

And that if there are such anticipated rewards and perceived opportunities, then we may well see more attempts on candidate Trump’s life?

In sum, presidential campaigns traditionally kick off after Labor Day and mostly follow accepted protocols. But this warped 2024 version violates every prior precedent and is not just creepy but dangerous — even before the campaign was supposed to formally begin.

US Supreme Court won't allow LGBT student protection in certain states

Andrew Chung Fri, August 16, 2024 at 5:36 p.m. EDT·1/2

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Friday to let President Joe Biden's administration enforce a key part of a new rule protecting LGBT students from discrimination in schools and colleges based on gender identity in 10 Republican-led states that had challenged it.

The justices denied the administration's request to partially lift lower court injunctions that had blocked the entirety of the rule expanding protections under Title IX, a law that bars sex discrimination in federally funded education programs, while litigation continues. The lower court decisions had prevented the U.S. Education Department from enforcing the new rule, announced in April and set to take effect on Aug. 1, in Tennessee, Louisiana and eight other states.

The administration had sought to restore a key provision of clarifying that discrimination "on the basis of sex" encompasses sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as the rule's numerous other provisions that do not address gender identity.

Biden's administration had asked the Supreme Court to intervene on an emergency basis in a lawsuit by Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Idaho, and numerous Louisiana school boards, and another lawsuit by Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia and an association of Christian educators.

"These final regulations clarify Title IX's requirement that schools promptly and effectively address all forms of sex discrimination," U.S. Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon said when the rule was announced. "We look forward to working with schools, students and families to prevent and eliminate sex discrimination."

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill called the rule a federal overreach that would eviscerate Title IX, and criticized what she called Biden's "extreme gender ideology."

"This is all for a political agenda, ignoring significant safety concerns for young women students in pre-schools, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across Louisiana and the entire country," Murrill said of the federal rule when she announced the state's lawsuit.

"These schools now have to change the way they behave and the way they speak, and whether they can have private spaces for little girls or women. It is enormously invasive, and it is much more than a suggestion; it is a mandate that well exceeds their statutory authority," Murrill added.

The states and the other plaintiffs had argued that the rule would force schools to allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms, and faculty to use transgender students' pronouns, that correspond to their gender identities.

The lawsuits are two among several that have successfully blocked the law in 22 states- nearly all Republican-governed - arguing that the Democratic president's administration is unlawfully rewriting a law designed more than a half century ago to protect women from discrimination in education.

On July 30, the administration scored a win when a federal judge in Alabama refused to block the rule in that state, as well as Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. That ruling was temporarily halted the next day by the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

(Obama didn’t get his perverse desire to destroy America today)

'STRAIGHTFORWARD APPLICATION'

The Biden administration rule makes numerous changes to regulations combating sex discrimination under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, including by covering LGBT individuals as well as strengthening protections for pregnant students, parents and guardians.

The administration said protecting LGBT students under Title IX is a "straightforward application" of the Supreme Court's landmark 2020 ruling that a similar law known as Title VII barring workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.

U.S. Judge Terry Doughty in Monroe, Louisiana and U.S. Judge Danny Reeves in Lexington, Kentucky both concluded that Title IX's reference to sex relates only to "biological" males and females, and that the Supreme Court's 2020 ruling did not apply in this context.

The administration has said that most of the rule has nothing to do with gender identity and should be allowed to take effect, but agreed that two key provisions - one implicating restrooms and locker rooms and the other potentially implicating the use of pronouns - could remain blocked while the appeals play out in court.

The administration also said that the rule does not change "existing requirements governing sex separation in athletics," noting that the issue is the subject of a "separate rulemaking."

The New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied requests to partially enforce the rule, prompting the administration to seek the Supreme Court's intervention.

In June, the Supreme Court agreed to hear another case from Tennessee, involving a Republican-backed ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The court will hear the case in its next term, which begins in October.
