U.S. Space Command chief expresses support for Armyâs space initiatives
August 16, 2024
U.S. Space Commandâs top general voiced support for the U.S. Armyâs efforts to expand its space expertise, pushing back against criticism that such initiatives encroach on Space Force territory.
Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, addressed the issue during a Q&A session at a National Defense Industrial Association conference in Colorado earlier this week.
His comments came in response to a recent op-ed by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, a think tank affiliated with the Air & Space Forces Association, which argued that the Armyâs latest space initiatives unnecessarily duplicate Space Force capabilities.
The Mitchell Instituteâs article appeared just days after news reports highlighted the Armyâs plans to boost its space expertise, including discussions by Army officials about the serviceâs evolving role in space-based operations and support for a new space-focused career field for enlisted soldiers.
âThe nation does not need the Army to duplicate those capabilities,â wrote Mitchell Institute senior fellows Charles Galbreath and Jennifer Reeves in a piece published by Breaking Defense.
âIn truth, the Army replicating Space Force operations within its service wastes precious resources, undermines jointness.â
Whiting said he disagreed with this perspective. According to a transcript of his remarks obtained by SpaceNews, Whiting emphasized that space expertise does not have to be exclusive to the Space Force.
âAs a combatant commander I want capabilities,â he said. The expertise of the Army and the other services is âabsolutely vitalâ to military operations in the space domain, Whiting added.
Jointness in space operations
Whiting noted that U.S. Space Command benefits from the expertise of all the branches of the military, and pointed out that the Army needs space expertise for maneuver warfare.
U.S. Space Command is now run by a Space Force general but Whitingâs predecessor was an Army officer, underscoring the multi-service nature of space operations.
Whiting praised the Armyâs collaboration with the Space Force in recent years, citing a smooth transition of satellite systems previously run by the Army to Space Force control. âI was a part of that transition over the last two years, and they were fantastic partners,â he said.
The Army has also transferred control of the Joint Tactical Ground Station (JTAGS) mission to the Space Force, further consolidating space operations within the new branch. JTAGS units operate the Pentagonâs missile-warning satellites.
Whitingâs comments come amid ongoing discussions about the Armyâs plans to create a new space-focused career field for enlisted soldiers.
The Mitchell Institute said such moves constitute âencroachmentâ on Space Force responsibilities.
This debate echoes historical tensions within the Pentagon, where branches often compete for control over emerging technologies and budget allocations.
Before the establishment of the Space Force, disagreements arose between proponents of the new branch and those who argued that space units should remain within the Air Force.
Years before that, the Air Force and the Army feuded over control of high-flying drones, culminating in a decision by the Pentagon to prevent any single service from monopolizing drone capabilities.

Multiple UFO Sightings Reported in Southern California; Residents Share Unsettling Encounters
August 17, 2024
Recent reports from Southern California have sparked intrigue and concern, as residents of Palmdale and Lancaster claim to have witnessed multiple UFO sightings.
The accounts, shared primarily on platforms like the Ring Neighbors app, describe unusual aerial phenomena that have left the community both fascinated and uneasy.
The sightings began when one resident noticed a peculiar light in the sky while walking their dog.
âI saw a bright light hovering in the sky,â they said, âand it didnât look like any aircraft Iâve ever seenâit was just floating there!â
This experience has been echoed by others, with reports of up to six flying objects observed within a span of just ten minutes.
Interestingly, the area where these sightings occurred is close to a significant military base and Lockheed Martinâs Skunk Works facilityâan operation known for its cutting-edge and often classified aerospace projects.
This proximity has fueled speculation that the objects could be advanced military aircraft rather than extraterrestrial in origin.
The sightings quickly gained traction online, with social media posts flooding in from those claiming to have seen the mysterious crafts.
One post read, âYou guys⌠you wonât believe what I just saw! I was sure it was some kind of plane until it just stopped and hovered. It looked more like a hovercraft than anything else.â
Another user mentioned being inspired by the initial reports to step outside and investigate for themselves.
âWe counted six flying objects after just a few minutes,â they shared, although they stopped short of confidently identifying the objects as âflying saucers.â
In a particularly eerie account, a resident described watching what they first thought was a shooting star, only for it to suddenly halt midair before zigzagging out of sight.
âI had to check if I was seeing things,â they said, wondering if others had noticed the same strange behavior.
Local authorities have been alerted to these reports and are currently investigating the incidents.
Whether these sightings can be attributed to experimental technology or something more otherworldly remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, the Palmdale and Lancaster communities remain on edge, as more residents come forward with similar experiences.
This story is developing and updates will be provided as further information becomes available.

Long March 4B launches experimental Yaogan-43 satellite group
August 16, 2024
China successfully launched the first of a new group of Yaogan satellites Friday to test technologies for a low Earth orbit constellation.
A Long March 4B rocket lifted off from Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 3:35 a.m. Eastern, Aug. 16 (0735 UTC), rising into partially cloudy skies above the hills surrounding the spaceport.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. (CASC) confirmed launch success within an hour of launch, revealing the mission to be Yaogan-43 (01).
Few details were initially revealed about the Yaogan-43 (01) mission. The number of satellites were not initially disclosed.
However, mission control screen renders suggest a number of satellites attached to a payload adapter.
SAST, which also provided the hypergolic Long March 4B launcher, issued a mission patch containing nine stars. In Chinese, the character for âstarâ is often used interchangeably with âsatellite.
The mission used the largest fairing coupled with the Long March 4 rocket series so far to accommodate the payloads.
The satellites are understood to have been variously developed by, or involved payloads from, CASCâs China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) and Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST), IAMCAS under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and MinoSpace, a commercial spacecraft maker, according to post-launch statements from these entities.
Yaogan (âremote sensingâ) satellites are thought to be for users including military customers. Few details, if any, are available about the satellites.
They are typically described as being for purposes including land survey, crop yield estimation, environmental management, meteorological warning and forecasting, and disaster prevention and reduction or âelectromagnetic environment detection and related tests.â
Exceptionally, the satellites for Yaogan-43 (01) are described as âmainly used to carry out new technology experiments for the low-orbit constellation system.â
It is not stated as to which low Earth orbit constellation this refers. China is planning to construct separate communications megaconstellations named Guowang (ânational netâ) and Shanghai-backed G60 Starlink/Thousand Sails.
The remote sensing aspect could suggest a system with integrated communications and optical or other capabilities.
In general, the various series of Yaogan satellites are understood to include optical imaging, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electronic intelligence (ELINT) satellites.
This combination provides high-resolution imagery and all-weather and all-day and night imagery, along with the collection of electronic signals from radar, communication systems and other electronic devices, with coverage of both land and sea.
The launch was Chinaâs 36th of 2024. CASC stated early in the year that China aimed to launch around 100 times this year.
It added that commercial launch providers will account for around roughly 30 of these launches.
Major missions include Shenzhou human spaceflight missions, space station cargo flights. China has already completed Changâe-6 lunar far side sample return mission.
The previous launch carried the first 18 satellites for the G60 Starlink or âThousand Sailsâ low Earth orbit megaconstellation.
That launch, also facilitated by SAST, saw the rocket upper stage break up into at least 700 pieces of orbital debris.

King Charles told to unveil the 'truth about UFOs' after 'piloting alien craft'
12:49, 17 AUG 2024
A new documentary named the King of UFOs is set to be released detailing the Royal Familyâs interest in UFOs and potential alien life.
The film is set to investigate a mysterious alleged UFO landing which involved Louis Mountbattenâs estate Broadlands, Hampshire.
Portrayed in the Crown by Greg Wise and Charles Dance, the Lordâs supposed involvement with alien life has not yet been fully explored.
The documentary is also thought to look into the late Queenâs fascination with UFOs and crop circles, which she shared with Prince Philip.
Archival footage and information is thought to show the royals as extraterrestrial enthusiasts.
Rumours that the then Prince Charles piolted an experimental UFO craft in 1975 is expected to be looked into. An interview with witnesses is thought to be featured with detailed accounts of their experiences.
A driver who was working on a classified military project at Sandy Point, Canada, says he saw Prince Charles pilot the prototype himself.
The driver said the craft was powered by an electro magnetic force and Charles was one of three pilots in the craft who were taking it to the NASA base at Langley, US.
John Hanson, the owner of The Great British UFO Learning Centre, announced he had been warned UFOs are demonic in origin by leading religious figures.
They claim they should be left alone. Nick Pope who used to work for the British Ministry Of Defence also says members of the British government also believe this to be true.
The warnings of government officials are expected to be ignored as the documentary will explore the spacecrafts and their potential meanings.
Hanson, who kept regular contact with the Queen and Prince Philip, said the royal couple had their own library of UFO books and even some on the paranormal world.
Richard Felix from Sky Witnessâ Most Haunted maintains that the Royal Family have their own secret archives of UFO stories.
He even adds it rivals the Vaticanâs.
Mark Christopher Lee, the documentary director, also discusses the role of King Charles in a potential extra-terrestrial encounter: âThe King would have a pivotal role to play as head of state and as head of the Church of England and defender of all faiths.
âHe would have to prepare his people for a high paradigm shift and there would political as well as spiritual implications to first contact.
With UFO sightings increasing around the world this may be closer than we think and the King should be prepared.
âNick Pope who we speak to in the film has found out that the UK has attended Five Eyes briefings on UFOS and I suspect King Charles will know the truth.
I hereby call on our King to release the truth to the public. We deserve to know if we are not alone in this universe."
