Target CEO addresses ‘price gouging’ accusations in retail

WED, AUG 21 20248:19 AM

Melissa Repko@IN/MELISSA-REPKO@MELISSA_REPKO

KEY POINTS

•Target CEO Brian Cornell said there’s no room for price gouging in the competitive retail landscape.

• Cornell was asked whether the tactic boosted Target’s profits, after Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris outlined a plan to stop price gouging.

• He spoke to CNBC after Target beat quarterly earnings expectations.

There’s no room for price gouging in an ultracompetitive business like retail, Target CEO Brian Cornell said Wednesday.

In an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” the retail chief disputed campaign talking points accusing grocers of inflating prices. He said retailers have to be responsive to customers or risk losing business.

He was asked by CNBC’s Joe Kernen, who referred to comments by Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris and asked if Target or its competitors ever benefit from price gouging. Harris last week proposed the first-ever federal ban on “corporate price-gouging in the food and grocery industries,” saying some companies are charging excessively and fueling household inflation.

“We’re in a penny business,” Cornell responded, noting the small profit margins in the retail industry. He described the many places that customers can turn to check for lower prices or to find merchandise elsewhere, from going to stores to browsing on their phones to compare the prices of a gallon of milk at different retailers.

Target’s retail chief made the comments after the discounter beat Wall Street’s expectations for earnings and revenue on Wednesday, but struck a cautious note with its full-year guidance. It said it expects comparable sales, which take out the impact of store openings and closures, to be on the lower side of its range of flat to up 2%. Yet it raised its profit guidance, saying it expects adjusted earnings per share to range from $9 to $9.70, up from the previous outlook of $8.60 and $9.60.

Inflation and consumers’ outrage about high prices have continued to loom large for companies like Target. A wide range of retailers, including Home Depot, Walmart and Macy’s, have reported over the past two weeks that cautious consumers are being picky about where they’re spending. Cornell said on “Squawk Box” that the retailer is trying to appeal to “a consumer who is managing their budget carefully” and said“value is in our DNA.”(So is trans, LBTQT…)

Target is one of the consumer brands that has responded to shoppers’ concerns by lowering prices. It cut prices on about 5,000 everyday items, such as diapers and peanut butter, to try to drive higher traffic and sales. Others, such as McDonald’s, have debuted value meals. So far, those discounts have shown signs of resonating at Target: In the quarter, customer traffic across Target’s stores and website rose 3% — even as shoppers put a little less in their shopping carts than they did a year ago.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said last week that prices have come down in many merchandise categories, but said that inflation “has been more stubborn” in the aisles that carry dry groceries and processed foods.

On an earnings call with investors, he said some brands “are still talking about cost increases, and we’re fighting back on that aggressively because we think prices need to come down.”

BREAKING NEWSBill Pascrell, New Jersey Democratic congressman, dead at 87

By MORGAN PHILLIPS, CONGRESS REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

UPDATED: 12:26 EDT, 21 August 2024

Democratic congressman Bill Pascrell has died at the age of 87.

The New Jersey lawmaker served 28 years for the state's 9th congressional district in the House of Representatives and was hospitalized after an incident last week.

He recently spent 28 days in treatment and needed 'breathing assistance', but then suffered a setback which forced him back into a rehabilitation facility.

'It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning,' his family said on X.

'As our United States Representative, Bill fought to his last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved.

'Bill lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served. He is now at peace after a lifetime devoted to our great nation America.'

Pascrell had been hospitalized in July for respiratory issues and spent some time in intensive care. He had planned to run for reelection in the House.

The 14-term congressman had been discharged on August 7 but was readmitted to the hospital just four days later.

The fierce Trump critic was the lower chamber's second-oldest member behind Democrat Grace Napolitano of Texas, who is also 87. The oldest member of Congress is Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who turns 91 next month.

Pascrell is the second New Jersey Democrat to die while serving in the House this year, following Donald Payne, 65, who in April suffered a heart attack and later succumbed to complications.

County party leaders will now be able to hand-pick a new Democratic nominee to take on Republican Billy Prempeh, Pascrell's opponent in the last two cycles. Pascrell defeated Prempeh 55 to 42 in 2022.

Born January 25, 1937 in Paterson, New Jersey, Pascrell would go on to serve in the Army and become mayor of his hometown. After getting bachelor's and master's degrees at Fordham University, he taught history at high school and as an adjunct professor.

He got his start in politics in the late 1970s on the local school board and later as a member of the local community college's board of trustees.

He won election to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1987 and won the mayor's race a few years later. He held both seats at once for a time - a practice that was then commonplace in New Jersey - until he was elected to Congress in 1996.

Pascrell has been on the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Homeland Security, Budget and Small Business committees.Since 2007 he's held a spot on the powerful tax-writing committee Ways and Means where he led the charge for Trump's tax returns.

Old Article

Trump’s new press secretary was arrested for DUI while working on the 2016 campaign during her rocky rise to the White House John Haltiwanger Aug 22, 2019, 3:16 PM EDT

• White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham had a tumultuous rise to her prestigious role in US politics.

•Grisham faced allegations of ethical misconduct in previous jobs and was twice arrested for driving under the influence. (She’ll fit in fine with Democrats)

• One of the DUIs took place while Grisham worked as a press aide for Trump's 2016 campaign.

• Grisham has taken an unconventional approach to her White House post, and hasn't held a single on-camera briefing since she took over for Sarah Huckabee Sanders in early July.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham had a "turbulent ascent" to her current role, according to a New York Times report, which included two arrests for driving under the influence — one of which while working for Donald Trump's 2016 campaign. She was arrested for driving under the influence, speeding, and driving with an invalid license in 2013, according to the report, and the charges were later reduced to reckless driving. Grisham was also arrested for driving under the influence in December 2015, ultimately pleading guilty. She paid a fine and wasordered by the court into a treatment program.

Grisham told the Times she "complied with all sanctions and disclosed both episodes to the White House." Grisham entered the political world by way of Arizona, working as a spokesperson for the attorney general in the state as well as Republicans in the state legislature. She also worked as a press aide on Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign for president.(Another plant)

Prior to that, she worked for the AAA auto club in Arizona as well as the ad agency Mindspace.Grisham reportedly left AAA after facing allegations of filing false claims for travel and other expensesand lost the job at Mindspace for plagiarism.

A spokesperson for AAA declined to discuss personnel matters with the Times, and the founder of the ad agency confirmed Grisham was a former employee but would not elaborate on the circumstances of her departure. Grisham did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

Here's a brief summary of Grisham's experience in the political world:

• Grisham worked as a spokesperson for the Arizona Charter Schools Association from 2008 to mid-2010.

• She was a spokesperson for Tom Horne, Arizona's attorney general, in 2011.

• Grisham went on to work as a press aide for Mitt Romney in 2012, andin a 2017 interview said she was "devastated" for about a month after his loss in the presidential election.

• Grisham went back to Horne's office after 2012.

• During her work for Horne, he was under investigation for alleged campaign finance violations. When reporters from a local paper asked questions about it, Grisham characterized their requests as "overreaching, an invasion of privacy and abusive use of your role in the media."

• After Horne lost his bid for re-election (and was fined over the campaign finance case), Grisham went to work as a spokesperson for Arizona House's Republican majority.

• At one point, Grisham briefly revoked the press credentials of the The Arizona Capitol Times after it published a story on allegations the GOP House Speaker David Gowan traveled on the taxpayers' dime while campaigning for Congress.

• Grisham began working for Trump's campaign in mid-2015 as a press aide.

•Starting in 2017, Grisham initially served as White House deputy press secretary, but eventually moved on to become communications director for First Lady Melania Trump.

• In June 2019, it was announced Grisham would replace Sarah Huckabee Sanders as White House press secretary.

Grisham is a fierce defender of the Trumps, but also represents a break from the traditional mold of her prestigious role in the White House.

Grisham hasn't held an on-camera briefing since taking over in early July and does not appear particularly interested in engaging with members of the press.

Remember Hunter said that they believe in REVENGE (to the Chinese guy, or something like that),Joe is so pissed he's even going to dump all the dirt they have done since then. He probably got a pardon, or plan to skedaddle to some foreign country. But he's not going to let them win.

It will be slow drip of rumors. Then it won't be rumors but undeniable truth. Then whistleblowers will come out from Ukraine, Russia, etc.

Then the final REVENGE bow:Since Bidan was not a real legal president, he'll reveal what O put him up to steal the 2020. AND then for the whole shazam Obama is not and has never been an American Citizen and he's got proof, from many people; and he has pictures of Obama being f'd by Michael, and him/her walking around naked…October Surprise.

But the good part it won't come from Joe or the family, but concerned Whistleblowers. If you thought "grab them by the pussy" was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Melania Trump's former press secretary Stephanie Grisham reveals the moment that forced her to resign as she endorses Kamala Harris

Former Trump aide tears into her old boss during appearance at the DNC

By SARAH EWALL-WICE, SENIOR U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER F UPDATED: 10:10 EDT, 21 August 2024

Donald Trump's former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham made an appearance at the Democratic National Convention where she received cheers as she laid into her old boss in scathing speech.

'I saw him when the cameras were off. Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters—calls them “basement dwellers,"' she said. 'When people were dying in the ICU, [Trump] was mad that cameras weren't watching him. He has no empathy. No morals. No fidelity to the truth.'

Grisham told DailyMail.com after her speech that it was 'surreal' to speak at the convention amid thousands of Democrats. 'Everybody's been really welcoming, and so it's been great,' she said. 'I was really scared, I'm not going to lie.' Grisham was chief of staff and press secretary to former First Lady Melania Trump as well as White House press secretary and communications director during the Trump administration. She learned she would be speaking at the convention five days ago, she told DailyMail.com.

After the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, she resigned from the Trump administration. She addressed her decision in her convention speech.'On January 6, I asked Melania if we could at least tweet that while peaceful protest is the right of every American, there’s no place for lawlessness and violence,' Grisham said. 'She replied with one word: “No.”'

'I became the first senior staffer to resign that day. I couldn’t be part of the insanity any longer,' Grisham added. Grisham was one of several Republicans to appear at the Democratic National Convention on night two as the Harris campaign makes a point to reach across the aisle in their effort to eat into the GOP voting base.

The former Trump official spoke about how close she once was with the Republican presidential nominee and his family. 'I wasn’t just a Trump supporter. I was a true believer—one of his closest advisors. The Trump family became my family,' she recalled. 'I spent Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas at Mar-a-Lago.'

Grisham spoke during her speech about how she resigned from the Trump administration after the attack on January 6. She said she would be voting for Kamala Harris saying she 'tells the truth'

'He used to tell me, “It doesn’t matter what you say, Stephanie. Say it enough, and people will believe you.” But it does matter what you say–and what you don’t say,' she told the welcoming crowd.

While serving as White House press secretary, Grisham not once ever held a press briefing. Trump campaign officials blasted her in response to her convention speech.

'That’s one more time at the podium than she logged as White House press secretary, when she didn’t hold a single press briefing while occupying the position,'wrote Tim Murtaugh who worked on the Trump 2020 campaign and recently rejoined the 2024 campaign.

During her speech, Grisham spoke of her time at the White House. 'When I was press secretary, I got skewered for never holding a White House briefing. It’s because, unlike my boss, I never wanted to stand at that podium and lie,' she said.

'Now, here I am: behind a podium, advocating for a Democrat because I love my country more than my party,' she went on.'Kamala Harris tells the truth. She respects the American people, and she has my vote,' Grisham finished.

'I'm still very much a Republican,' she told DailyMail.com, but she said the election was too important.(NOT ANY MORE.)

Generic Congressional Ballot

GOP Lead Holds Steady on Generic Congressional Ballot

Wednesday, August 21, 2024

With less than three months remaining before election day,Republicans have a five-point lead in their battle to maintain their narrow House majority.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that if theelections for Congress were held today, 48% of Likely U.S. Voters would vote for the Republican candidate, while 43% would vote for the Democrat. Just five percent (5%) would vote for some other candidate, but another four percent (4%) are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The GOP’s advantage is unchanged since May, when they also led by five points – 47% to 42% – over Democrats. Two years ago, in August 2022, Republicans also had a five-point lead on the generic congressional ballot. In the final poll before Election Day 2022, Republicans held a five-point lead, and scored a net gain of nine seats to capture a 222-213 House majority.

Hunter Biden’s tax evasion trial will go forward next month after judge throws out bid to toss case

By Josh Christenson and Priscilla DeGregory Published Aug. 21, 2024, 1:00

(This judge might be the one good man that God found)

Hunter Biden’s federal tax evasion trial will go forward next month — after a California judge tossed the first son’s latest attempt to get the case dismissed.

The trial accusing President Biden’s already felon son will begin Sept. 9 in Los Angeles court. He’s accused of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019.

Hunter’s legal team askedLos Angeles Judge Mark Scarsito dismiss the three felony and six misdemeanor tax charges he faces on the grounds that David Weiss’ appointment to prosecute the case as special counsel was unconstitutional and Weiss — a Delaware US attorney — doesn’t have jurisdiction to oversee the California case.

The motion promptedScarsi to threaten sanctions against the Biden son’s lawyers for lying about Weiss’ involvementin the probes against Hunter.

Hunter’s attorneys responded by claiming they didn’t intentionally lie but rather misused a single word two times.

Scarsi — who has rejected three prior bids by Hunter to have the case dismissed, including over Weiss’ appointment — canned the latest motion to dismiss on Monday. He said Hunter’s team didn’t raise any new legal issues and that the latest motion comes too late.

Hunter’s team kicked up a fuss about Weiss’ appointment again last month, claiming that a bombshell ruling dismissing the documents case against former President Donald Trump over special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment should apply in Hunter’s case too.

But Scarsi called the Trump ruling “non-binding” — meaning it’s not applicable to this case.

Hunter has pleaded not guilty in the case.

Hunter was separately convicted in June for illegally owning a gun while hooked on drugs and is set to be sentenced on Nov. 13.He faces up to 25 years behind bars in the Delaware case, which Weiss also prosecuted.

A spokesperson for Weiss’ office declined to comment. Hunter’s lawyers didn’t immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.

(I guess the CAI is losing their valuable asset. Hunters luck ran out when Joe got kicked out.)
