Cyberattack Hits US Defense Supplier Of Critical Chips, Impacting "Ability To Fulfill Orders"

US chipmaker Microchip Technology disclosed that an "unauthorized party" had compromised "certain servers and some business operations." This cyberattack raises significant concerns due to Microchip's critical role in supplying advanced chips to the US defense industry, supporting critical systems such as precision strike and missile defense weapons, radar systems, autonomous platforms, image processing, and command and control centers.

Microchip first detected "potentially suspicious activity involving its information technology ("IT") systems" on Saturday, the Chandler, Arizona-based company wrote in an SEC filing on Tuesday.

"Upon detecting the issue, the Company began taking steps to assess, contain and remediate the potentially unauthorized activity," Microchip said.

Ukraine Sends One Of Largest Ever Drone Attacks On Russian Capital

Russia on Wednesday says its anti-air defenses have successfully thwarted a major Ukrainian drone attack against the capital of Moscow, having shot down eleven inbound drones in total.

"The echeloned defense of Moscow against enemy UAVs made it possible to repel all attacks. This was one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow with the help of drones of all time," Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a Telegram post early Wednesday morning.

Russia's defense ministry said the effort to target the capital was part of a broader cross-border attack which included 45 drones total sent by Ukraine across different regions overnight, including:

11 shot down over the Moscow region

23 intercepted over the Bryansk region

6 over Belgorod,

3 over the Kaluga region

2 over Kursk

The second night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago saw the repeated elevation of Jewish voices.

The Tuesday program began with an invocation from Los Angeles Rabbi Sharon Braus. It continued with enthusiastic embraces of Gov. JB Pritzker, Gov. Josh Shapiro and Sen. Bernie Sanders from the tens of thousands in the packed United Center; and it featured primetime speeches from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who used the platform to speak out against antisemitism, followed by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, who reveled in his Jewish identity and how it has strengthened since his wife Kamala Harris became vice president and as she now seeks one final promotion.

Perhaps it was because of the overwhelming visibility enjoyed by Jewish Democrats — including those who support Israel — that efforts by other members of the community to hide the location of the events held on the sidelines of the convention became more noticeable.

The fear of disclosing exact details of such gatherings proved warranted when several anti-Israel protesters burst into an afternoon event organized by Agudath Israel of America and began shouting “Shame!” at the participants and chanting against Zionism. The event ironically dealt with rising antisemitism in the US and had little to do with Israel, but the visibly Jewish Orthodox attendees were apparently an easy target for the masked far-left activists.

Other events organized by Jewish or pro-Israel groups went forward uninterrupted, but attendees of receptions such as the Israeli American Council’s “Hostage Square” were only notified of the pop-up expo’s exact location several hours in advance. IAC also said it set up on private property roughly a mile away from the United Center after failing to secure a permit from the city for a space closer to the DNC perimeter.

New Democratic Party Platform Pledges ‘Ironclad’ Commitment to Israel

The platform also boasts of Biden's new military interventions in the Middle East, including the bombing campaign in Yemen

On Monday, delegates at the Democratic National Convention voted to adopt the party’s new 2024 platform, which vows “ironclad” support for Israel amid its US-backed genocidal war in Gaza.

“President Biden and Vice President Harris believe a strong, secure, and democratic Israel is vital to the interests of the United States,” the platform reads. “Their commitment to Israel’s security, its qualitative military edge, its right to defend itself, and the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding is ironclad.”

The 2016 Memorandum of Understanding is an agreement reached under the Obama administration that committed the US to providing Israel with $3.8 billion in military aid each year from 2019 to 2028.

The strong commitment to arming Israel comes amid protests at the DNC for Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 nominee, to commit to imposing an arms embargo on Israel. But Harris is not expected to alter US policy toward Israel.

The Democratic Party’s platform also claims that President Biden has been working for “peace” in the Middle East and a ceasefire deal for Gaza. But his administration refuses to use the leverage it has over Israel to force a deal, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to sabotage the chances of an agreement with Hamas.

The 92-page platform boasts of Biden’s new military interventions in the Middle East, including the bombing campaign against the Houthis in Yemen, which has only escalated the situation in the Red Sea, and the US defense of Israel from an Iranian attack in April.

Iran fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel in response to the Israeli bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus. “Through direct defensive action by the US military and its partners, Iranian munitions did not cause significant damage, demonstrating both America’s ironclad commitment to the security of Israel and our unrivaled ability to leverage growing regional integration among US partners to counter Iranian aggression,” the platform reads.

The Republican Party’s new platform, which was adopted in July, is much shorter but also offers support for Israel, which is the only foreign country mentioned in a positive way. “We will stand with Israel and seek peace in the Middle East,” it reads.

The Democratic Party platform lists the proxy war in Ukraine and the US military buildup in the Asia Pacific as achievements of the Biden administration. The platform says Biden has recognized China as “America’s most consequential strategic competitor,” aligning with the Pentagon’s view that China is the top threat facing the US.

Members of Israel’s negotiating team believe Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is purposely trying to sabotage the chances of a deal with Hamas, Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reported on Tuesday.

A source speaking to Kan referred to Netanyahu saying on Tuesday that he would not give up Israeli control of the Gaza-Egypt border, known as the Philadelphi Corridor, or the Netzarim Corridor, a strip of land that separates northern Gaza from the rest of the Strip.

“Netanyahu’s statement is intended to blow up the negotiations, there’s no other way about it. The prime minister knows that we are in a critical period during which we’re working on solutions for the Philadelphi Corridor and Netzarim ahead of the next summit,” the source told Kan.

“He knows there is progress — and then he puts out statements that are the opposite of what was agreed upon with the mediators,” the source added.

A US official traveling with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also told The Times of Israel that Netanyahu’s comments about the Philadelphi Corridor were hurting the negotiations. “Maximalist statements like this are not constructive to getting a ceasefire deal across the finish line,” the official said.

Blinken has not publicly criticized Netanyahu and is instead saying it’s up to Hamas to agree to a deal. “In a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu today, he confirmed to me that Israel supports the bridging proposal,” he said on Monday, referring to a US proposal that includes demands from Netanyahu and doesn’t include a permanent ceasefire. “The next important step is for Hamas to say ‘yes.'”

Israeli officials told Axios that Netanyahu only agreed to the US proposal because he knew Hamas would reject it. Hamas is calling for the ceasefire proposal presented by President Biden in May to be implemented.

Hamas said on Tuesday that the new proposal was a “reversal” of the previous US-backed plan and showed an “American submission to the terrorist Netanyahu’s new conditions and his criminal plans towards the Gaza Strip.”

“As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact,” GM said Monday in a statement confirming the cuts, without specifying how many people were affected. GM declined to say how much the reductions will reduce its overall software engineering workforce.

Women's accessories sold by some of the world's most popular online shopping firms contained toxic substances sometimes hundreds of times above acceptable levels, authorities in Seoul said Wednesday, August 14.

Chinese giants including Shein, Temu and AliExpress have skyrocketed in popularity around the world in recent years, offering a vast selection of trendy clothes and accessories at stunningly low prices.

The explosive growth has led to increased scrutiny of their business practices and safety standards, including in the European Union and South Korea, where Seoul officials have been conducting weekly inspections of items sold by online platforms.

In the most recent inspection, 144 products from Shein, AliExpress and Temu were tested, and multiple products from all companies failed to meet legal standards.

Shoes from Shein were found to contain significantly high levels of phthalates − chemicals used to make plastics more flexible − with one pair 229 times above the legal limit.

"Phthalate-based plasticizers affect reproductive functions such as sperm count reduction, and can cause infertility and even premature birth," an official from Seoul's environmental health team told Agence France-Presse. One such chemical "is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Cancer Institute, so special care should be taken to avoid long-term contact with the human body," they added.

Russian Airstrikes Hit Militant Hideouts Near U.S. Base In Syria

Russian strikes hit two hideouts used by militants in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, Captain 1st Rank Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria said on August 19.

“During the past day, the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) delivered airstrikes on two places of the deployment of militants who left the al-Tanf area [which is controlled by United States forces] and were hiding in hard-to-reach areas of the al-Bishri ridge in the Deir Ezzor governorate,” the Russian military official said.

Video footage showing what appears to be the airstrikes announced by the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria surfaced online on August 18 and 19.

The U.S. maintains a 55-kilometer no-fly zone around al-Tanf. However, VKS warplanes fly over the garrison on a regular basis.

The U.S. claims that it is present in al-Tanf to counter ISIS. Nevertheless, the real purpose of the garrison is to block the strategic Damascus-Baghdad highway. In addition, the garrison is reportedly being used as an outpost to collect intelligence, facilitate Israeli attacks against Syria and train militants.

On August 18, the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria reported that an American F/A-18 fighter jet “dangerously approached” a Russian warplane near al-Tanf a day earlier.

“On August 17 morning, a coalitions’ F/A-18 fighter bomber dangerously approached an An-30 plane of the Russian aerospace forces making a planned flight over Syria. The incident took place at an altitude of around 6,700 meters over the al-Tanf area in the Homs governorate,” Ignasyuk said, adding that the Russian pilot demonstrated high professionalism and took timely measures to prevent a collision.

Several similar aerial encounters were reported by he Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria during June and July, all of which took place near al-Tanf.

Tensions between the Russian military group and U.S. forces in Syria have been high since Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. Recent escalation by the U.S. could eventually lead to a dangerous incident.

Top US oilfield firm Halliburton hit by cyberattack

Top US oilfield services firm Halliburton on Wednesday was hit by a cyberattack, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The attack appeared to impact business operations at the company's north Houston campus, as well as some global connectivity networks, the person said, who declined to be identified because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Spokespeople for the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The company has asked some staff not to connect to internal networks, the person said.

Cyberattacks have been a major headache for the energy industry. In 2021, hackers attacked the Colonial Pipeline with ransomware, causing a days-long shutdown to the major fuel supply line.

That breach, which the FBI attributed to a gang called DarkSide, led to a spike in gasoline prices, panic buying and localized fuel shortages. It also created a major political headache for President Joe Biden as the U.S. economy was starting to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several major U.S. companies have suffered ransomware attacks in recent years, including UnitedHealth Group, gambling giants MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment CZR.O and consumer good maker Clorox.
