I’d found an interesting article from the 70s a while back- it was about attacks against the Catholic Church in S. America for “turning communist.” During that time, the church started pushing its rhetoric about helping the “poor and needy” and it apparently did not go over well. I’m sure the article could be found again, but it layed it out as a deliberate move by the church and people saw through it.
