Andriy Yusov, a representative of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), said on Ukrainian television that “the rebels received necessary information, which enabled a successful military operation against Russian war criminals.”
The attack was claimed by a Tuareg rebels group along with the al Qaeda affiliate in the Sahel, JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin). Known for ad hoc cooperation, they appear to have collaborated to trap the Russian convoy.
JNIM claimed Sunday that a “complex ambush” had wiped out the convoy, killing 50 Russians and a number of Malian soldiers, and published videos showing several vehicles ablaze as well as dozens of bodies in the area. A Tuareg militant group spokesman said some Malian troops and Russian fighters had also been captured during the battle.

On behalf of the Governments of the three countries of the Confederation of Sahel States, the Ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger sent a joint letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council to denounce the Ukrainian Government's open and assumed support for international terrorism, particularly in the Sahel.
The content of the letter is as follows:
"Indeed, we were unpleasantly surprised by the subversive remarks of Mr. Andry Yusov, Spokesman for the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Agency, admitting Ukraine's involvement in the cowardly, barbaric and barbaric attack, on July 24, 25 and 26, 2024, by armed terrorist groups that caused the death of elements of the Malian Defense and Security Forces in Tinzawatène, Mali, as well as significant material damage.
These statements were confirmed by Mr. Yurii Pyvovarov, Ambassador of Ukraine to Senegal, who openly and unequivocally expressed his country's support for international terrorism, particularly in the Sahel. Worse, these senior Ukrainian officials publicly announced other "results" to come.
These statements, which are extremely serious, go beyond the framework of foreign interference, which is condemnable in itself. This is official and unequivocal support by the Ukrainian Government for terrorism in Africa, particularly in the Sahel. These acts also constitute a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our States, a clear aggression by our countries and support for international terrorism, in flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and related international conventions.
Therefore, we strongly condemn the aggression and the apology by the Ukrainian authorities for terrorism, which can not be justified. We call on the Security Council to assume its responsibilities in the face of Ukraine's deliberate choice to support terrorism, a scourge that is unanimously rejected internationally in all its forms and manifestations.
Stressing that the acts officially claimed by Ukraine, an aggressor State, constitute a direct threat to international peace and security, particularly in the Sahel region and Africa, we call on the Security Council, which is primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security, to take appropriate measures against these subversive actions that strengthen terrorist groups in Africa and are a manifestation of the involvement of foreign State sponsors in the expansion of terrorism in the region, something that our States have regularly denounced.
These acts of aggression, far from achieving their objective, on the contrary strengthen the commitment and determination of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger, within the framework of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), to continue with greater vigor their resolute march towards the strengthening of their sovereignty and the taking control of their destiny, in accordance with the deep aspirations of the populations of the AES."

Mali says cutting ties with Ukraine over alleged involvement in rebel attack
Mali is immediately cutting diplomatic ties with Ukraine over comments by a spokesperson for Ukraine's military intelligence agency (GUR) about fighting in its north that killed Malian soldiers and Wagner fighters in late July, it said on Sunday.
Mali's northern Tuareg rebels say they killed at least 84 Russian Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers over days of fierce fighting in the north of the West African country in what appears to be Wagner's heaviest defeat since it stepped in two years ago to help Mali's military authorities fight insurgent groups.
GUR spokesperson Andriy Yusov has not confirmed Kyiv's involvement in the fighting, but in comments published on public broadcaster Suspilne's website on Monday, July 29, he said the Malian rebels had received the "necessary" information to conduct the attack.
"The rebels received all the necessary information they needed, and not just the information, which allowed (them) to conduct a successful military operation against Russian perpetrators of war crimes. We certainly won't go into details now - you will see more of this in the future," he said.
Mali said it had learned "with deep shock of the subversive remarks."
It said Yusov had "admitted Ukraine's involvement in a cowardly, treacherous and barbaric attack by armed terrorist groups that resulted in the death of members of the Malian Defence and Security Forces."
"The actions taken by the Ukrainian authorities violate the sovereignty of Mali, go beyond the scope of foreign interference, which is already condemnable in itself, and constitute a clear aggression against Mali and support for international tIt also cited comments by Ukraine's ambassador to Senegal, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast and Liberia.
Senegal's foreign minister summoned Ukrainian Ambassador Yurii Pyvovarov on Friday over a video it said the Ukrainian embassy had posted on its Facebook page in which Pyvovarov provided "unequivocal and unqualified support for the terrorist attack" in Mali.errorism," the Malian government said.
