France wants to ‘shut down’ Telegram – Russian human rights chief

Tatyana Moskalkova has blasted the arrest of Pavel Durov as a violation of free speech

French authorities arrested Telegram founder Pavel Durov because they want to shut down the censorship-free platform, Russia’s top human rights official, Tatyana Moskalkova, has said.

The Russian tech mogul – who is also a citizen of France, the UAE, and Saint Kitts and Nevis – was arrested after his private jet landed at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on Saturday. The French authorities said an official statement would be made on Monday. Local media has reported that prosecutors believe Durov had failed to curb the use of his platform by criminals.

Writing on Telegram on Sunday, Moskalkova argued that “the real reason behind Pavel Durov’s arrest is an attempt to shut down Telegram, the platform where you can find the truth about world affairs.” The persecution of Durov angers “everyone who supports the freedom of speech and the creation of the multipolar world,” she added.

In a separate post, Moskalkova condemned Durov’s arrest as “another gross violation of freedom of speech.”

“It is another glaring example of double standards when it comes to the respect of fundamental human rights by countries that praise democracy but, in reality, are seeking to crush it,” she wrote. “Instead of fighting crime, discrimination, and other human rights violations, they want total control over expression of opinions.”

Moskalkova described Durov as a man who “created an easy-to-use, simple and accessible tool for communication between people all over the world, a channel for the rapid spread of information that is free from censorship.”

Telegram issued a statement on Sunday, saying the company complies with EU laws and content-moderation policies, adding that it is “absurd” to claim that Durov is responsible for the misuse of the platform by bad actors. Earlier this year, Telegram appointed a Belgian legal representative to ensure EU compliance.

Durov has consistently refused to provide user data to the authorities or install a surveillance “backdoor,” and has spoken publicly about the pressure he has faced from the US. He was also vocal about his disagreements with the Russian government, which contributed to his decision to leave Russia in the 2010s and move to the UAE.

Nevertheless, many Russian politicians condemned Durov’s arrest, with some suggesting that it could be politically motivated. Multiple public figures in the West, including journalist Tucker Carlson and entrepreneur Elon Musk, have also spoken out in defense of Durov.

Telegram breaks silence after Durov arrest

Company CEO Pavel Durov is not responsible for any misuse of his platform, Telegram said in a statement on Sunday

Telegram has broken its silence following the arrest of its founder Pavel Durov by French authorities on Saturday, insisting the tech entrepreneur “has nothing to hide.”

Durov was taken into custody at Paris-Le Bourget Airport, immediately after arriving from Azerbaijan by private jet. According to French media, prosecutors in Paris plan to charge the 39-year-old with complicity in drug trafficking, pedophilia offenses, and fraud, arguing that Telegram’s insufficient content moderation, its strong encryption tools, and its alleged lack of cooperation with police allow criminals to flourish on the app.

Telegram dismissed the accusations on Sunday, stating that the company follows EU laws and that its content-moderation policies are “within industry standards.”

“Pavel Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe,” the statement continued, calling it “absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform.”

“Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as means of communication and as a source of vital information,” the company concluded. “We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation.”

Telegram is headquartered in Dubai, although the company appointed a Belgian legal representative earlier this year to manage its compliance with EU law. Telegram has also complied with the bloc’s anti-Russian sanctions by blocking access to Russian news outlets, including RT.

However, Durov has reportedly consistently refused to hand over user data to law enforcement agencies, or to install so-called ‘backdoors’ so that these agencies can surveil conversations on the app.

Speaking to RT on Sunday, Durov’s former spokesman suggested that French authorities could have made the arrest on behalf of the US, after the tech entrepreneur publicly accused American intelligence agencies of pressuring him into giving them access to Telegram user data.

Prosecutors investigating captain of sunken yacht that killed couple with home in South Kent, Connecticut

Christopher Morvillo, who was a defense attorney for Mike Lynch, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were among the 12 passengers and 10 crew aboard the Bayesian, an 184-foot yacht that sank near Sicily after it was slammed by a powerful storm on the early morning of Aug. 19, the Associated Press reported.

The excursion was intended in part to be a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud case in which Morvillo defended him, according to the AP. The former federal prosecutor in New York most recently was a partner at Clifford Chance and known as an elite defense attorney specializing in fraud and corruption cases, the AP reported.

In a statement Thursday, a spokesperson for Clifford Chance said the firm was “heartbroken at the tragic passing of our partner, Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda.”

“We are deeply saddened and still coming to terms with this terrible loss,” the firm continued. “Our utmost priority is to continue to support Chris’s family at this very distressing time. Our thoughts extend to the families and loved ones of all those affected.”

“We wish to express our deepest condolences and our love and support to Chris’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. We also want to thank the Italian authorities and rescue teams for everything they have done,” the statement read.

Property records show the Morvillos owned a four-bedroom home on an 11.7-acre property in South Kent. The couple bought the property in August 2018.

Christopher Morvillo also attended the Canterbury School, a boarding school in New Milford, from 1980 to 1983, according to what appears to be his LinkedIn account. The school declined to confirm whether Morvillo was a student, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Captain Of Bayesian Superyacht Is Being Investigated Following Fatal Wreck

According to Italian media reports, prosecutors are starting an investigation into 51-year-old James Cutfield that could lead to manslaughter charges.

However, being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow.

La Repubblica reported that magistrates had spoken to Cutfield on Sunday for the second time that week and questioned him for over two hours.

It was also reported that prosecutors might also investigate one of the surviving crewmates.

On Monday, August 19th, a storm struck the 184-foot superyacht, known as the Bayesian, just minutes before it capsized and sank while anchored off the coast of northern Sicily, carrying 22 people.

The Bayesian was owned by Lynch’s wife’s company, who was one of the 15 survivors.

Ambrogio Cartosio, the head of the public prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese, released a statement on Saturday saying that although a sudden meteorological event had struck the yacht, it was possible that multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck through negligence were committed.

A captain is fully responsible for the ship, crew, and everyone on board under maritime law.
