Many users of X, formerly Twitter, seem deeply misguided. They imagine that Elon Musk is the saviour of free speech. He’s not. He is simply the latest pioneer in monetising speech. Which isn’t the same thing at all.

All the blue ticks on X — mine included — are buying access to an audience. Which is why Musk has made it so easy to get a blue tick — and why there are now so many of them on the platform. If you don’t pay Musk, the algorithms make sure you get minimal reach. You are denied your five seconds of fame.

That has particularly infuriated corporate journalists. On what used to be called Twitter, they got access to large audiences as a natural right, along with politicians and celebrities. They never paid a penny. They felt entitled to those big audiences because they already enjoyed similarly big audiences in the “legacy media.” They did not see why they should start competing with the rest of us to be heard.

The new media system was rigged, as the old media system has been for centuries, to ensure that it was their voices that counted. Or rather it was the voices of the ultra-wealthy paying their salaries who counted.

Independent journalists, including myself, have been some of the chief beneficiaries of Musk’s X. But I don’t for a minute make the mistake of thinking Musk is really in favour of my free speech — or anyone else’s — compared to his own.

U.N. Chief António Guterres: Fossil Fuels Are ‘Cooking Our Planet’

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned Tuesday that the “climate crisis” threatens the lives of humans all over the world due to rising sea levels and flooding.

Egypt Reiterates Opposition To Israeli Military Presence at Gaza-Egypt Border

The Israeli demand to maintain control of the border, known as the Philadelphi Corridor, is one of the main obstacles to a Gaza ceasefire deal

Egypt on Monday reiterated its objection to Israel maintaining control of the Gaza-Egypt border, known as the Philadelphi Corridor, as part of any Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal.

“Egypt reiterated to all relevant parties its rejection of any Israeli presence at (the Palestinian side of) the Rafah crossing or the Philadelphi Corridor,” an Egyptian official said, according to Anadolu Agency.

The comment came after hostage deal talks concluded in Cairo on Sunday, with reports saying no progress was made. Israel’s demand to maintain the Philadelphi Corridor is one of the main obstacles to a deal, as Hamas wants an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on controlling the border even though the Israeli military doesn’t think it’s necessary. On Saturday, Reuters reported that Netanyahu has been in a dispute with Israeli negotiators, who are willing to agree to an Israeli withdrawal from the Philadelphi Corridor.

“The prime minister insists that this situation will continue, contrary to pressure from certain elements in the negotiating team who are willing to withdraw from there,” a person familiar with the negotiations told Reuters.

After the meeting concluded in Cairo on Sunday, Hamas called for the implementation of the ceasefire deal previously presented by President Biden. The US recently put forward a new proposal that included many of Netanyahu’s demands and doesn’t include a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal.

“The Hamas delegation demanded that the occupation be bound by what was agreed upon on 2 July, based on what was stated in Biden’s speech and the Security Council resolution. Hamas confirms its readiness to implement what has been agreed upon, in a way that achieves the supreme interests of our people and stops the aggression against them,” said Hamas spokesman Izzat al-Rishq, according to The Cradle.

“The Hamas delegation stressed the movement’s position that any agreement must include a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the freedom of return of residents to their areas, relief and reconstruction, and a serious exchange deal,” he added.

Under Tim Walz, Minnesota Banned Christians From Teaching In Public Schools

Effective July 2025, teacher licensing rules passed last year in Minnesota under Democrat Gov. Tim Walz will ban practicing Christians, Jews, and Muslims from teaching in public schools. Walz is now the presidential running mate of current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. His resume includes a stint as a high school social studies teacher who sponsored a student queer sex club in 1999.

Starting next July, Minnesota agencies controlled by Walz appointees will require teacher license applicants to affirm transgenderism and race Marxism. Without a teaching license, individuals cannot work in Minnesota public schools, nor in the private schools that require such licenses.

The latest version of the regulations requires teachers to “affirm” students’ “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” to receive a Minnesota teaching license:

The teacher fosters an environment that ensures student identities such as race/ethnicity, national origin, language, sex and gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical/developmental/emotional ability, socioeconomic class, and religious beliefs are historically and socially contextualized, affirmed, and incorporated into a learning environment where students are empowered to learn and contribute as their whole selves (emphasis added).

Last spring, administrative law judges finally approved these pending changes The Federalist reported one month before they were finalized. Universities are also affected: starting in 2025, they must either train their teaching students to fulfill these anti-Christian requirements or be banned from offering state licensing — and thus the ticket to the vast majority of teaching jobs — to their students.

Since 2020 in Minnesota, teachers renewing their licenses, which is usually required every five to seven years, must demonstrate “cultural competency” similar to the requirements imposed in 2025 on new teaching licensees. The Grok chatbot on the X social media platform has been updated following a letter sent to platform owner Elon Musk from five secretaries of state demanding he make changes over false election information.

Democrat Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon announced the change Monday, after he had been informed of the change by the social media company last week.

Simon, along with four other secretaries of state, sent a letter earlier this month to Musk claiming their combined "37 million constituents were recently impacted by false information" Grok provided about the election.

The AI chatbot will direct users who enter election-related terms into their inquiry to vote.gov for more information and resources.
