Trump’s WWIII warning is understandable – Kremlin

While the former US president’s statements are “alarmist,” they should be taken seriously, Dmitry Peskov has said

Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region has escalated tensions “to the limit,” and former US President Donald Trump is correct to warn that the situation could spiral into “World War III,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

In a speech at the National Guard Association’s annual conference in Detroit on Monday, Trump claimed that the US has never “been closer to World War III than we are now.” “Look at what’s going on right now with Ukraine,” he continued. “They’re surging into Russia, okay? You’re going to end up in World War III, and it’s going to be a bad one.”

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Peskov said that “There is a cause for concern, and in this case, such alarmist statements, probably… can be treated with understanding.”

Ukrainian forces invaded Kursk Region on August 6, in the largest attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since the start of hostilities in February 2022. The advance was swiftly halted by the Russian military, but fighting in the region continues, and Ukrainian troops still hold a number of settlements in the border area.

The Ukrainian military has made heavy use of Western weapons during the incursion, and Moscow has accused the US, UK, and Poland of training some of the units that took part in the operation. Washington denies any foreknowledge of the operation, and American officials say they’re still unsure what Kiev’s objectives are.

Trump has insisted since last year that President Joe Biden’s Ukraine policy is dragging the US into a third world war, and that he would have the conflict settled “in 24 hours” if he is elected president this November. In an interview with tech billionaire Elon Musk earlier this month, he argued that Biden could have easily reached an agreement with Russia before the conflict began in 2022, but chose not to.

Trump told Musk that Biden started saying such stupid things. For instance, he said that ‘[Ukraine] can be a NATO country.’”

“I could have stopped that, and a smart president could have stopped that. It was so bad, the words that [Biden] was using, the stupid threats coming out of his stupid face… that could lead to World War III,” he said.

Trump has claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris, who assumed the role of Democratic candidate when Biden suspended his reelection campaign last month, would continue the “endless war” started by her boss.

Warren Buffett offloads Bank of America shares worth $982 million in latest sale

Billionaire Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) has sold some more shares of Bank of America (BAC.N) over the past few days, raking in $981.9 million, as the conglomerate continues to trim down its stake in the second-largest U.S. lender.

Berkshire has now shed about $5.4 billion worth of Bank of America shares in a string of sales since mid-July.

The conglomerate sold about 24.7 million shares of the lender between Aug. 23 and Aug. 27, according to a regulatory filing on Tuesday.

Shares of Bank of America were down 0.5% in premarket trading on Wednesday. They have fallen 4.8% over the last month, compared with a 1.7% fall in the KBW Bank Index (.BKX).

Buffett, one of the world’s most revered investors, started investing in Bank of America in 2011, when Berkshire purchased $5 billion of preferred stock.

The 93-year-old’s investment in the lender came at a time when some investors were worried about the bank’s capital needs.

The stake sales mark a turnaround from last year when Buffett singled out Bank of America and its CEO Brian Moynihan for praise.

“I like Brian Moynihan enormously,” Buffett told CNBC in April 2023. “I don’t wanna sell it.”

After the latest stake sale, Berkshire still remains the bank’s largest shareholder, owning 903.8 million shares, worth $35.85 billion based on Tuesday’s closing price.

TikTok must face lawsuit over 10-year-old girl’s death, US court rules

A U.S. appeals court has revived a lawsuit against TikTok by the mother of a 10-year-old girl who died after taking part in a viral “blackout challenge” in which users of the social media platform were dared to choke themselves until they passed out.

While a federal law typically shields internet companies from lawsuits over content posted by users, the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday ruled the law does not bar Nylah Anderson’s mother from pursuing claims that TikTok’s algorithm recommended the challenge to her daughter.

She sued after her daughter Nylah died in 2021 after attempting the blackout challenge using a purse strap hung in her mother’s closet.

“Big Tech just lost its ‘get-out-of-jail-free card,'” Jeffrey Goodman, the mother’s lawyer, said in a statement.

U.S. Circuit Judge Paul Matey, in a opinion partially concurring with Tuesday’s ruling, said TikTok in its “pursuit of profits above all other values” may choose to serve children content emphasizing “the basest tastes” and “lowest virtues.”

“But it cannot claim immunity that Congress did not provide,” he wrote.

U.S. Circuit Judge Patty Shwartz, writing for the three-judge panel, said that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 only immunizes information provided by third parties and not recommendations TikTok itself made via an algorithm underlying its platform.

“TikTok makes choices about the content recommended and promoted to specific users, and by doing so, is engaged in its own first-party speech,” she wrote.

TikTok did not respond to requests for comment.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said the operation was part of a “fully-fledged war,” comparing the situation to the Gaza Strip, saying Israeli forces must implement similar measures being carried out in the West Bank.

These are considered the largest raids done by Israel in the West Bank in at least 20 years, since Israeli officials said Operation Defensive Shield was executed during the Second Intifada.
