The influence of the Society of Jesus in American finance first became apparent about fifty years ago when the Italian financier A. P. Giannini founded the Bank of California, now one of the largest banks in the world under the changed name of Bank of America. Giannini was an extremely clever financier who owed his starting capital to the Jesuits and acted as their confidant or straw man. Today, Bank of America is 51 percent owned by the Order.
