I doubt Herb was the session guy for the original, but good question. Tijuana Brass was running big about the same time, and Alpert's wife was one of the lead singers with Sergio Mendes during all of that, so I doubt they'd have time for a Bacharach studio session. But he Might've…will go look, at the original session, only.
Trumpet/flugelhorn like that was "The Sound" in the studio during that period, mid-60s. To get away from Pops (Louis A), Al Hirt, and, of course Herb, the hot front guys at the time.
Real Trumpet Blare didn't really came back to the fore again with the Chicago or Philly Sound, with bands like Chicago, or Three Dog Night. In Jazz, Miles re-kicked the trumpet into orbit with Bitch's Brew. Leaving aside for now the Gerald Wilson or Quincy stuff.
It's actually two horns on the '66 cut, quite distinct. Session was A&R, NYC so gotta dig into those records. Might get lucky in the credits at AllMusic, but I doubt it, because of the full orchestra.

At a minimum, Mel Davis would have been at least one of the trumpeters. If Peter Matz pulled him for this band, chances are he'd have been in on the June 1966 session for Dionne.
