The Swedish car giant Volvo has become the latest automaker to scrap their electric vehicle (EV) production targets, citing a decerase in overall demand.

In a statement on Wednesday, company CEO Jim Rown admitted that customers are not ready to switch just yet and that many still prefer gas or diesel powered vehicles.

“We are resolute in our belief that our future is electric,” he said. “However, it is clear that the transition to electrification will not be linear, and customers and markets are moving at different speeds of adoption.”

The company, which is majority-owned by China’s Geely Holding, is also bracing for the effects of European tariffs on electric cars made in China.

The decision to scale back its ambitions comes three years after they announced plans to go fully electric by 2030. Instead, they are now aiming for between 90 to 100 percent of sales o be fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by the end of the decade. Continue…

The first issue is the alleged software glitch that resulted in the AfD and the Christian Democrats (CDU) both losing a seat, while the Greens and Social Democrats (SPD) both gained one seat. The party says that it is launching an investigation into this.

“We want to know exactly what went wrong,” said the AfD’s state and parliamentary group leader Jörg Urban in a statement. He is demanding an exact error analysis. “If there are any irregularities, we will take legal action.”

The DOJ claims that RT and two of its employees - Kostiantyn “Kostya” Kalashnikov and Elena “Lena” Afanasyeva - worked to funnel money to Tenet Media as part of a series of "covert projects" aimed at shaping narratives within Western audiences.

The indictment specifically notes that the influencers - including Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, Dave Rubin and Lauren Southern - had no idea they were taking Russian money, and were deceived. Calgary city councillors and Mayor Jyoti Gondek are furious with the Alberta government after the province announced they would pull $1.53 billion in funding for the city’s Green Line LRT project.

In a Sept. 3 letter, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen called the revised Green Line plan “unacceptable,” stating that the project had become a “multi-billion-dollar boondoggle that will serve very few Calgarians.”

Dreeshen also criticized former Calgary Mayor and current provincial NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi.

“To be clear, we recognize your and the current Council’s efforts to try and salvage the untenable position you’ve been placed in by the former Mayor and his utter failure to competently oversee the planning, design, and implementation of a cost-effective transit plan that could have served hundreds of thousands of Calgarians in the city’s southern and northern communities,” he wrote.

Calgary city council spent much of Wednesday debating the uncertain future of the Green Line LRT project, directing their frustration at the province.

“I lay the blame squarely at the feet of the province for not doing their work and having appropriate conversations with the experts that we have working on this project to understand what it is we are delivering and how we can best deliver it to meet everybody’s goals,” Calgary Councillor Kourtney Penner said. A public servant was found guilty of breach of trust last week after he admitted to transferring nearly $250,000 of taxpayer funds to his privately owned company.

The RCMP announced that Marc Primeau, a former Liberal government employee who was responsible for the transport of goods at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, has received a 24-month conditional sentence for breach of trust.

According to the police, Primeau inappropriately used his position as an ISED employee to direct purchases totalling $231,663.48 from the government agency to his personal and solely owned company Access Security Logistix, between Feb. 1, 2016, and Sept. 26, 2018.

The RCMP began investigating after changes to ISED’s internal accounting and record-keeping practices led to the discovery that Primeau purchased goods from his personal company with taxpayer funds. He was dismissed from his job at ISED in February 2019, and the evidence was handed off to the RCMP for investigation.

Primeau admitted to directing 72 sole-source contracts to ASL in an agreed statement of facts while successfully competing for six purchase orders.

“Primeau was the person responsible for ensuring that goods were properly received from ASL to ISED while concealing his relationship with ASL from ISED,” the news release said. Continue…

The Liberals’ federal campaign director Jeremy Broadhurst privately told Trudeau that he would be leaving the position last month, anonymous sources reported to the Toronto Star.

Broadhurst allegedly told the prime minister that he didn’t think he could win the next election and that Trudeau should acquire a new campaign director who did think a fourth term was possible.

According to one source within the Liberal party, Broadhurst also told Trudeau that he no longer had the fight in him to continue.

A parents group had complained that the Hanover School Division board in a predominantly Christian area was not 'inclusive' enough.

A school board located in a predominantly Conservative Christian part of Manitoba will now have a governmental “adviser” oversee its activities after a pro-“diversity” parents group complained it was being not “inclusive” enough because some of its trustees participated in the 1 Million March 4 Children rally.

The Hanover School Division located in southern Manitoba includes an area that has many people of the Mennonite community, who are known for living very traditionally, oftentimes shunning many forms of technology. The Mennonites are also Christian and hold conservative views regarding family and sexuality.

Due to some recent motions that the Hanover school district tried to pass and after complaints from a group called the Hanover Parent Alliance for Diversity, the radical New Democratic Party (NDP) provincial government of Manitoba appointed retired superintendent Kelly Barkman to advise the board. Anti-Israel Activists Crash Toronto Film Festival Opening Night Screening

The first night of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was interrupted Thursday when anti-Israel protesters briefly tried to interrupt screening of the opening offering.

Their chants targeted Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) which is the official bank partner of the annual celebration of film.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the protest came before a screening of David Gordon Green‘s opening movie Nutcrackers, starring Ben Stiller, held at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre ahead of a nearby opening screening attended by the star.

The outlet set out what happened next, noting four protesters chanted “From Turtle Island to Palestine, RBC funds genocide” and raised banners declaring “RBC is killing our future” and urging: “TIFF, cut ties with RBC.”

After about four minutes, and amid a chorus of boos from the audience, the demonstrators were led out of the theatre by security.

A group called RBC Off Screen said in an emailed statement seen by the Canadian Press that the protest was “an act of solidarity with those fighting to address the climate emergency, as well as end the war in Gaza, and support Indigenous sovereignty.”

The statement said the disruption was part of ongoing calls from some film workers and environmental groups for TIFF to sever ties with RBC. The group is critical of the bank’s connection to the fossil fuel industry, as well as its investments in weapons manufacturers implicated in the Israel-Hamas war.

RBC called the protest “unfortunate” and said such demonstrations shift attention from artists and are “weakening support” for the arts.

“We respect the right of individuals to make their voices heard, but it’s unfortunate to see activist groups attempting to co-opt this important cultural event,” the bank said in a statement to the Canadian Press late Thursday, adding it felt deeply for those affected by the “humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza.”

A government commission named 900 alleged war criminals living in the country but its report has been kept secret since 1986

The Canadian state archives have been advised against releasing the names of alleged Nazi war criminals residing in the country, for fear it might boost “Russian propaganda” against Ukraine.

The Library and Archives Canada (LAC) has received multiple requests to declassify the list of around 900 names, compiled by a 1986 war crimes commission. After consulting with “multiple stakeholders,” the LAC has decided to hold off on its publication.

A report on these consultations said that many of the stakeholders were worried about the implications “of associating Ukrainian names with Nazis,” claiming that this would validate Russia’s claims about its military operation in Ukraine, according to the Globe and Mail. The newspaper is among those that filed a request to have the names released.

Russia could use the list to “further these allegations or conduct disinformation campaigns in Canada,” which might affect public support for Ukraine, the LAC was reportedly told.

“A few stakeholders were concerned that the release of the report would result in new legal action (criminal prosecution, citizen revocation, or otherwise) being brought against the individuals named in the report,” an LAC memo published by the Ottawa Citizen on Wednesday said.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress appears to have been one of the otherwise unnamed stakeholders. The group’s CEO told the Globe and Mail that the list should “remain confidential,” but anyone on it found to have committed war crimes ought to be prosecuted.

Sask 14-year-old charged after setting classmate on fire

A 14-year-old girl has been charged after a 15-year-old student was set on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon.

The charges include attempted murder, aggravated assault, and arson.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on September 5, when the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) were called to the school for an assault and fire.

The SPS said a Grade 9 girl was allegedly set on fire, and a teacher stepped in to extinguish the flames.

The 15-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to police reports.

The 14-year-old appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on September 6.

Police continue investigating the incident, but they think the suspect acted alone.

No further details have been released at this time about the victim’s condition or the possible motive.

This incident has shocked the school community and support services have been made available to students and staff.

Police identify man killed in Vancouver stranger machete attack; second victim has hand reattached

The man who was killed in a double stranger attack downtown Vancouver on Wednesday has been identified as 70-year-old Francis David Laporte.

Further information regarding the other victim, who had his hand severed, has not yet been released.

The Vancouver Police Department only provided Laporte's name and age, opting not to reveal where he was from. The decision to keep the other victim's identity under wraps was made, "for privacy reasons," as he is still in hospital after undergoing surgery.

According to Global News' Catherine Urquhart, sources familiar with the matter claimed that doctors were able to reattach his hand.

The suspect, 34-year-old Brendan Colin McBride, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault. He is expected to appear in court on September 18.

The first incident, in which the first victim had his hand hacked off, took place around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday near Cathedral Square on Richards St. and Dunsmuir St.

Just minutes later, McBride allegedly killed Laporte a couple blocks over on West Georgia St. and Hamilton St. in front of the entertainment complex that houses the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and Vancouver Playhouse.

Around an hour passed before officers were called to Habitat Island near Olympic Village following reports of a man "behaving erratically" and yelling at strangers. McBride was promptly arrested and taken to the Vancouver Jail.

VPD Chief Constable Adam Palmer later explained that the suspect had a "lengthy history of mental health-related incidents," and had repeatedly had charges stayed for violent crimes against police officers and healthcare workers.

He called on politicians to end the "revolving door of justice" and keep violent criminals off the streets.
