Blizzard has always been big on putting Easter Eggs in their games, world of Warcraft has a lot of tribute characters and quests that tie in to “real life”.
Tech has moved too fast for gamedev for years, taking 5 years to make a game is 4 years too long these days. And most of them have no longevity or little replayability.
