Steiner uses the name Ahriman to describe a cosmic being who represents everything that is clever, intellectual, materialistic, rigid and with many laws and rules…but without heart or a value for the human or spiritual in us.
Ahriman is actually also called Satan in religious literature and it is a name used by older mystic traditions to describe the same being. Steiner warns that Ahriman will appeal to our desire for eternal life here on earth, for material success and material things, he will appeal to the high value we put on intellectuality and information (as opposed to living reality and arts) and he will especially try to convince us that there is no spiritual world out there so we can just focus on life here and now and make the most of it.
To understand what Steiner means by the term, one has to read his actual writings and also the context for his descriptions or statements. I find that often people quote Steiner out of context making things sound old fashioned or contradictory.
Having spent 20 years reading Steiner and testing his ideas in real life experiences, I can say with confidence that he has me convinced and that what he has managed to impart to us will take ages to really understand and put to use, but it will be there, available to those who want to learn from him≥
Oh, and another things he mentions about Ahriman is that in his times knowledge and true information will be easily available in books and elsewhere for anyone to read and learn from it, but… nobody will want to bother. I see this today - we seek out the easy answers and those that appeal to what we already believe. There is fake information all around and the truth is easy to discover, but nobody wants to bother anymore.
Steiner calculates that it is very probable that this high cosmic being, Ahriman, will incarnate in a human body around this time and probably in the a Western country, maybe the USA or UK or elsewhere. He will be seen as a great leader, he will bring peace and great innovations in healing and other spheres and the world will adore him. It sill all be deception, tricks and illusions and if people do not manage to see through those, we will head in a technocratic and robotic future where man and machine will be hard to distinguish… and much more in Steiner’s lectures. Interesting stuff.
Steiner’s solution to avoid a disaster in the making? For humans to wake up and realize that they are not just earth beings, but also spiritual cosmic beings and that we are governed not just by natural law, but also by cosmic and spiritual laws. Otherwise the threat is there for our souls to become earthbound and our lives to become mechanistic - we will live in a world of grand technical achievements, but art, feelings, love and spiritual experiences will be difficult to achieve and probably will be persecuted or suppressed.
One of the many examples of how this was prepared that Steiner talks about is vaccines - he says that in the future (actually it is happening now) vaccines will be created that will disrupt our connection to the spirit worlds, making it harder to see ourselves as anything else but perishable beings. He also predicted the epidemic of dementia and Alzheimers and wrote that it will be a direct results of forcing children too early (before the age of 7) into academic and intellectual learning which causes their brains to not develop properly, thus in later life leading to memory problems and dementia.
And I actually see this whole conversation about putting chips into people, artificial intelligence and robots or the use of bacteria and living forms in computing, for example, as a sign of this merging of man and machine already appearing.
Now we can wait and see when this great leader of the world will appear and where. He is to have also a side kick or accompanying personality who will be a great magician and perfom many “miracles” before the world. We are heading into interesting times…and as the Chinese curse goes (“May you live in interesting times”) it may not be all that funny.
To leave this in a positive note, Steiner does follow the evolution of humanity into its distant future and he sees Ahriman as a necessary evil (not all that is Ahrimanic and technological is bad, it depends on how it is used) and he writes that, at the end of the journey, we will have to find a way to redeem him.
All comments on Steiner and anthroposophy by myself and I suspect others, have to be taken as a quick remark in conversation - reading the original lectures is more beneficial. It is impossible to impart the whole picture without the background and context, so these are just quick impressions.
