if matter starts out as one thing, and then keeps splitting, and then every half is just as important as the whole it came from, being more complex, and it could keep spliting, and the 'size' of it were determined by the number of halves over time, and each one having all the last whole part, from which it was halved, except in a smaller scale, then each time something split it would then double the amount of those halfed parts, and thus, it could be come infinitely more numerous as half-parts, forever.
so it wouldn't be measured by the amount of matter/energy but by the amount of matter/energy halfed parts that are of the same complexity as the whole from which it came.

and that would also maintain the law of 'energy can neither be created nor destroyed',
