OPEN BORDER: Residents of apartments in Aurora, CO have been under the rule of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang for a year. Officials from the governor to the local police chief have all denied there was an issue.

A nine-page report requested by the apartment's lender, marked "CONFIDENTIAL TREATMENT REQUESTED," was shared by the Perkins Coie law firm with Aurora's top administrators on August 9.

"The evidence we reviewed points to gang members engaging in serious criminal activities, including flagrant trespassing, assaults, human trafficking, sexual abuse of minors, unlawful firearm possession, extortion, and other crimes, often preying on vulnerable Venezuelan and immigrant populations," wrote T. Markus Funk, a former U.S. Attorney.

Neither Funk nor a second associate from the firm responded to CBS News Colorado’s requests for comment.

The firm, representing the lender for Whispering Pines Apartments at 1357 Helena Street, alleged the property is one of several Aurora complexes under the control of the Tren de Aragua gang. Their investigation involved interviews with witnesses and the review of surveillance footage from the complex.

A Denver law firm, tasked with investigating claims of a gang takeover at an Aurora apartment complex, reported that the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang began exerting control over the Whispering Pines Apartments in late 2023.
