A fund of $3 million was set aside for his unborn child John Jacob "Jakey" Astor VI, which he would control when he became of age.[19] On August 14, 1912, Astor gave birth to Jakey at her Fifth Avenue mansion. For the next four years, she raised him as part of the Astor family. She did not appear very often in society until the end of 1913, when according to the press, they published her first photograph since the Titanic disaster.[20]

Early life

 

John Jacob Astor V was born in Manhattan, New York City, in 1886, the fourth child of William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor (1848โ€“1919), and Mary Dahlgren Paul (1858โ€“1894). He was five years old when his family left New York to live in England.[1] He was raised on an estate purchased by his father at Cliveden-on-Thames in Buckinghamshire and was educated at Eton College and at New College, Oxford.[2] Astor was British Public Schools rackets champion in 1904โ€“1905, spent a year at Oxford and finally in 1906 joined the 1st Life Guards.[3]
