"Alarming polio outbreak spreads in Congo, threatening global eradication efforts"
Polio vaccination historically used/uses killed virus (inactivated = Salk vaccine) and weakened (live attenuated = Sabin vaccine) to prevent the infection and paralysis associated with virus infection.
According to this report (confirmed elsewhere) the attenuated strain has mutated/reverted back to a paralytic version in some children and causing a major concern.
From the article: "Public health experts have worked for months to stamp out the virus, but it keeps spreading. It has already paralyzed 29 children, and on 21 June a case was reported on the border with Uganda, far outside the known outbreak zone, heightening fears that the virus will sweep across Africa."
