Part of that "disbelief" stems from an unconscious desire to avail themselves of their own racism by reaction formation, of seeking to convince themselves of an unrealistic set of thoughts BECAUSE of the Haitian's race, so that they can convince themselves they're not racist in having all those unrealistic thoughts.
