Exploding pagers. That's some next level shit right there. Are there actual explosives in the pagers? This would have meant a very long and dedicated covert operation to somehow get into the pager supply chain undetected. Or is this somehow causing the battery to explode through a hack?

Yeah. If they had somehow managed to build pagers with explosives then they likely would have been much more lethal than these incidents apparently are. And an explosive sniffing canine somewhere would have likely spoiled the operation once these things were moving around on the street. Dead short to the battery then. Gonna cause some to go all Luddite.

The pagers that detonated were the latest model brought in by Hezbollah in recent months, three security sources said.
