People in the News: Gavin Newsom, Sean âP. Diddyâ Combs, Willie Nelson and Doug Herzog.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) âMayor Gavin Newsom boosted his hipness factor after spending about 15 minutes chatting with members of Coldplayon local radio.
Newsom, 36, called in to KLLC-FM to express his admiration for the band, quiz its members about recent performances and welcome them to the San Francisco Bay area.
In return, singer and frontman Chris Martin and drummer Will Champion invited Newsom to the bandâs show at the Fillmore â 1,100 tickets sold out in mere seconds Sunday.
During the Wednesday call-in, Newsom, Martin, Champion and two disc jockeys chatted about the elections in the United Kingdom; Martinâs daughter, Apple, with his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow; and Newsomâs luxury resort in Napa, where Champion stayed earlier in the week.
After Newsom hung up, the band members said he sounded like a well-intentioned, genuine guy that San Francisco was lucky to have as mayor.

Rapper P. Diddy Gets Political at Last Nightâs Boys & Girls Harbor Gala
"We need to hold our vote."
By Zachary Weiss ⢠09/27/16 9:08am
Sean Combs, Janice Combs
The first presidential debate loomed over last nightâs 2016 Boys & Girls Harbor Salute to Achievement Gala held at Lincoln Centerâs David H. Koch Theater, giving a rushed feeling to the eveningâs proceedings. âIâm going to make this brief,â Boys & Girls Harbor Board Chairman, Stephen Dannhauser, said at the start of his remarks. âI know most of you want to go watch the debate.âLyor Cohen did the same in his introduction to the eveningâs lead honoree, Sean âP. Diddyâ Combs, who was given the Tony Duke Award for establishing his own charter school, Capital Prep, which recently struck a shared facilities partnership with Boys & Girls Harbor.
Lyor Cohen, Xin Li
Rather than follow suit, the legendary rapper chose to arrive just under an hour late to the eveningâs dinner with a handful accompanying guests, including his mother Janice Combs, girlfriend Cassie, and a full camera crew, and treated the crowd to his own non-partisan political grandstanding. He accepted his award with a 25-minute speech focused primarily on the state of education in inner-city communities, including his native Harlem, New York. âAs we wait for the government to call a state of emergency on the unfairness of the education system, and how itâs going to be fixed, we have to do it ourselves,â he said. âWe canât slow down. We have to lead by example. We have to show the success rate, and we have to instill the importance of education in our communities, and how hard you have to work to really be a leader.â
Sean Combs, Lyor Cohen
Since he launched the âVote or Dieâ campaign in 2004, Combs has continued his staunch defense of voter registration, but urged us all to âhold our vote.ââYeah, I said it,â he added before ceding the stage to a performance by Andra Day and later donating an additional $25,000 to the Boys & Girls Harbor programs. âWe need to hold our vote. We need to make sure that weâre not standing here 8 years from now when nothing has drastically changed to deal with these issues. We give aid to other countries, but we need aid right here in Harlem, and we need it now.â
