The wife and children of RT Arabic correspondent Hussein Ayad were injured in the Israeli airstrike, the network reported on Friday. Ayad’s family had been staying in an apartment building next to the blast site, and were taken to a nearby hospital after the incident.

RT’s press office described their survival as “miraculous,” and wished Ayad’s family a speedy recovery.

Video footage from the scene of the strike shows the target building completely leveled, and widespread damage to surrounding buildings.

European Union Boss Von Der Leyen Arrives in Ukraine, Heralding Fresh Cash For Bombed Power Network

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Ukraine on Friday focused on helping the country to repair and reconnect its war-damaged electricity grid and boost its heating capacity as winter approaches.

Around half of Ukraine´s energy infrastructure has been destroyed during its war with Russia, and rolling electricity blackouts leave parts of the east in darkness for four hours at a time. Von der Leyden said it was as though all of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia had lost electricity.

Meanwhile, winter is approaching.

“Heating season starts in two weeks and Russia´s relentless attacks on Ukraine´s civilian energy infrastructure aims to inflict maximum damage,” von der Leyen said as she arrived in Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “We will help Ukraine in its brave efforts to overcome this.”

The main aim is to help Ukraine decentralize its power grid, and to become less reliant on the big power stations that make easier targets for Russian forces. Around 260 missiles rained down in a major attack on energy infrastructure late last month.

The Europeans have already sent more 10,000 generators and transformers, and they’re supplying small and more mobile gas turbines too. These types of electricity-providing equipment is harder to hit and easier to repair.

Ukraine´s winter runs from late October through March, with January and February the toughest months. The Europeans hope to help supply around 25% of the 17 gigawatts of power that the country is likely to need this winter.

One aim of the EU assistance is to provide an incentive for people to stay in Ukraine. Some 4 million people have fled since the war began in February 2022, often to Poland and other neighboring countries.

The EU is providing assistance, such as short-term help to find a place to stay, jobs or education. But recently the number of people leaving has climbed. The commission, the EU´s powerful executive branch, estimates that 10,000 more people are applying for help each week.

On Thursday, the commission announced that it would provide an extra 160 million euros ($180 million) to help fortify Ukraine´s energy network. Of that, 100 million euros ($112 million) come from the windfall profits the EU has earned from interest on frozen Russian assets.

Von der Leyen said the plan is to make “Russia pay for it through the revenue generated by their frozen assets.” Denmark is also leading the charge on using the money to place orders for weapons and military equipment directly with Ukraine´s defense industry.

She and Zelenskyy will also discuss the use of loans organized by the Group of Seven major industrial powers to help bolster Ukraine´s conflict-ravaged economy, and weigh progress in Kyiv´s efforts to join the EU.

High School LGBT Club Sponsor Accused Of Sexual Misconduct, Trying To ‘Estrange’ Kids From Parents

A private K-12 school in Nashville is facing criticism from students, faculty, and parents over its response to accusations that the school’s former sponsor for a sexuality-focused club groomed a student last year.

In recent weeks, the University School of Nashville has faced calls for new leadership from parents, students, and alumni who say it improperly handled accusations that English teacher and Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club faculty sponsor Dean Masullo sexually harassed a student. Faculty at the school have also criticized the school’s response to the allegations, calling for more transparency.

The student, who graduated from USN in 2024, said that Masullo groomed her by isolating her physically and emotionally. She said that he attempted to escalate physical touch throughout her senior year after she turned 18. In an August letter to the school, a lawyer for the student wrote that Masullo “abused his position to touch her in a sexualized way,” giving several examples of inappropriate behavior toward her. The letter says that though she was sexually harassed, she “escaped without sexual abuse.”

The letter said there was a pattern of inappropriate behavior toward students who were a part of the GSA club, which Masullo was a sponsor of for nine years.

“He would pick favorite female or gay male students, text them in inappropriate ways, touch and hug them inappropriately, and take students to see movies outside of school and unrelated to school activities,” the letter said. “In nearly every case, the target of his behavior was a female or gay student, often a member of the GSA, and he would attempt to estrange these students from their parents.”

In one case, the letter alleged that Massulo would ask a girl for graphic details about her sexual activities.

The student says that the school has so far ignored her attempts to speak with them and suggested that leadership tried to downplay the incident. Other community members have also weighed in, criticizing the school for not hiring a firm to conduct an independent investigation into the accusations.

According to school officials, Masullo’s employment with USN was terminated in July after he was suspended in May to investigate the allegations. Parents want to know what the conditions of his termination were.

In response to backlash from the community, USN Board of Trustees President Eric Kopstain said on September 13 that the school would be bringing on an independent law firm to conduct an investigation into “new allegations of sexual contact made first by the alumna’s attorney and further alleged by recent letters from USN faculty to the Board of Trustees.”

“Although the investigation resulted in Dr. Masullo’s termination from USN, new information provided in letters recently received by the Board revealed general suspicions and new accusations of sexual contact concerning Dr. Masullo and the alumna that were not communicated during the initial investigation,” Kopstain wrote in a letter to the community obtained by The Daily Wire.

Kopstain added that it was asking the office of Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk to look into the matter and that the USN board would meet to examine and reconsider current policies related to sexual harassment.

“We apologize that our prior communications have disappointed so many of you. We regret that our communications and actions have not adequately addressed your concerns,” he wrote.

According to the school’s website, the purpose of its Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club was “to raise awareness of issues surrounding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and other non-binary identities.” In an interview for the school, Masullo said that he looked “forward to a day when the GSA has outlived its usefulness — when the world that we seek to create becomes a reality.”

The club would encourage members to not say anything one school day out of the year to stand “in solidarity with LGBTQ youth across the city, the state, the nation, and the world,” according to Masullo.

Parents across the country have raised concerns about GSA clubs pushing kids to focus on sexual identity, with some teachers keeping parents in the dark about their children’s involvement in the club.

Australia Prioritizing the Creation of a Wholesale CBDC

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is rapidly developing a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) as developed nations move toward a cashless society. RBA Assistant Governor Brad Jones announced that the bank is launching Project Acacia next month, with the goal of developing a wholesale CBDC within the next three years.

The first form of this digital currency is not yet intended for retail, but extensive research has gone into determining how Australia can transition away from hard currency. Last year, the central bank partnered with the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Center (DFCRC) to determine the best methods to begin transitioning away from the Australian dollar, with reports last stating “a CBDC could be viewed more as an enabling complement to, rather than substitute for, private sector innovation.” The program studied corporate bond settlements by the Australian Bonds Exchange, tokenized FX settlements, as well as offline payments from ANZ bank. The pilot program was met with some difficulties, but the central bank is now committed to uncovering the proper method prior to deployment. “Some uncertainties related to the bespoke nature of the pilot CBDC itself. For instance, the pilot CBDC was issued as a contractual liability of the RBA rather than under a legislative framework, as would likely be the case if a decision was ever made to issue a CBDC in the future,” the report added.

Paging The Hague: Israel’s Exploding Electronics Might Be War Crimes

Experts on international law pointed to the indiscriminate nature of the blasts in Lebanon and the prohibition on booby traps.

A day after pagers simultaneously exploded across Lebanon and Syria, a second round of bombs — this time embedded in walkie-talkies and solar equipment — detonated on Wednesday in Beirut and throughout Lebanon.

The combined death toll from the attacks rose to at least 37 people, including a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, with more than 3,000 wounded. Doctors at a Beirut hospital reported that many among the injured had lost eyes and had to have limbs amputated. Exploding walkie-talkies caused more than 70 fires to erupt in homes and stores across Lebanon, along with more than a dozen cars and motorcycles.

While the Israeli government has yet to claim responsibility for the attack, multiple U.S. officials have said Israel was behind the device explosions.

The seemingly indiscriminate nature of the attacks has drawn the attention and concern of experts in international law who caution that the explosions may rise to the level of war crimes.

“If it is Israel behind this, they’ve got some tough questions to answer, including to the U.S. government, because the U.S. government is providing great military support,” said Brian Finucane, a former State Department legal adviser under Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. “It really should be in the U.S. government’s interest to ensure that its military partners are complying with the laws of war.”

Finucane said that, were he still advising the State Department, he would urge the U.S. to ask a series of questions: Did Israel take precautions to minimize harms to civilians? Did it anticipate blasts to be large enough to harm civilians? How and when were the devices altered to be detonated?

On the specific topic of exploding pagers and walkie-talkies, he highlighted a law of war that prohibits the “use of booby-traps or other devices in the form of harmless portable objects which are specifically designed and constructed to contain explosive material.” Both Israel and Lebanon have agreed to the prohibition, Article 7(2) of Amended Protocol II, which was added to international laws of war in 1996.

Witnesses backed by military, foreign $$ hype war with Iran

At a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing on Thursday, witnesses proposed confronting Iran directly by deploying more military capabilities to the Middle East and the authorization of the use of force.

Yet, they conveniently neglected to mention that their employers — which included one Pentagon contractor and several think tanks funded by weapons manufacturers — stand to rake in profits from selling Congress on a military-first approach to Iran.

One of the witnesses of the hearing — billed as “Israel and the Middle East at a Crossroads: How Tehran’s Terror Campaigns Threatens the U.S. and our Allies” — was Kirsten Fontenrose. Fontenrose, a former Trump administration official, testified that the U.S. should pass an Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF), an open-ended congressional resolution that would authorize the president to engage in military action against Iran.

“The U.S. should make it clear to the leadership of Iran’s proxy, drone and missile programs that new capabilities now permit the U.S. and partners to dismantle their facilities and chains of command with low to no risk of negative secondary effects," she said. "Though ‘AUMF’ is a four letter word in Congress, an Authorized Use of Military Force could convey this quickly and clearly.”

Fontenrose is the President of Red Six Solutions, a red team defense consulting company and Pentagon contractor that prepares clients for threats against unmanned aerial systems. Its website boasts that its “pilot services include UAS operations, training, airspace coordination, event planning, and data generation with all types of UAS to include swarm, large-scale and turbine aircraft.”
