Memes
Presume that people can make sense of them as an identifiable symbol of something.
If they miss the point of the symbolism, it is because the creator of meme was unable to convey the message behind the symbolic message in a clear manner.
Other wise, it is just crappy amateur art.
People don;t readily accept bad art or poor symbolic representation. They just ignore it.
Like the all-seeing-eye. If the "symbol" is not recognized for what it really is, what is the net result?
Smug satisfaction for the creator ?
Loss opportunity to convey an understandable message?
Meme majik that has some real world effect/
Did memes exist before the Internet?
Who "pushed them" to "make them go viral"
You decide.
Like graffiti art in "urban areas".
Effective?
Meaningful, coherent symbol?
Self-gratification of the artist?
Causes societal change?
Waste of time and talent?
Lonely voice shouting in the wilderness,
Primal scream?
If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it….
