EARTH TO HOST 'MINI-MOON' FOR TWO MONTHS
A small asteroid dubbed 2024 PT5 is set to become Earth's temporary companion starting this Sunday.
Discovered by the ATLAS early warning system, this 33-foot-long space rock will spend about 56 days in Earth's orbit before departing on November 25.
Carlos de la Fuente Marcos, co-author of a study on the asteroid, explains that it won't complete a full orbit around Earth, but will be captured by our planet's gravity for this brief period.
While too small to be seen with regular telescopes, scientists plan to study it using the Gran Telescopio Canarias in the Canary Islands.
This phenomenon, known as a "mini-moon," is not uncommon.
Similar events occurred in 2020 and 2006-2007 with other small asteroids.
These temporary visitors provide valuable opportunities for scientists to study near-Earth objects and potentially learn more about asteroid origins and behavior.
Importantly, 2024 PT5 poses no threat to Earth.
