asheville, and other towns in western north carolina, are built in valleys next to rivers. when there's a deluge of rain in their ares, the mountains around them push the water down into the rivers below. that's what causes flash flooding. plus, they had dam failures…which releases a wall of water rushing downstream destroying everything in its path.

the parts of GA and FL that were hit are mostly flat. water disperses over a broader area in flat places. they still had flood damage, but the power of the water was much weaker, which is why they didn't see whole towns swept away.

God Bless him. He was just way in over his head with foreign policy as POTUS. Had no experience with it. He was an honorable and brilliant nuclear naval officer. He was a moral man. His post-presidency should serve as a template for former presidents. He taught many courses at Emory University. He was actively involved with Habitat for Humanity and similar charitable endeavors. He taught Sunday School and delivered sermons. I can't help but have respect for a man like that…regardless of his failures.
