In 1979, USS Sam Houston fired an unarmed practice torpedo near Guam that entered international waters and was promptly scooped up by a Soviet trawler. The Navy chased the trawler for 24 hours before diplomatic wrangling between Washington and Moscow resulted in the Soviets agreeing to give up their prize catch. Soviet and U.S. sailors swam out to meet in the middle of the ocean where the torpedo was returned along with a bottle of vodka upon which was written "Detente is detente."
