IDF in ‘Outrageous Threat’ to Irish UN Troops in Lebanon

Israel continues to isolate itself diplomatically after the IDF throws its weight around with U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon, writes Mick Hall.

srael’s actions prompted accusations from Hezbollah, Lebanese media, and Irish Defence Minister Micheál Martin who said the IDF was using the Irish troops as cover, or human shields, as it extended its invasion. When asked by a journalist if Irish peacekeepers were being used as such, Martin said, “they’re certainly availing of the cover that that presents.”

New York City rents 150 hotels at $352 per room each night to house illegal immigrants through 2025

Over 150 hotels are being used at the average cost of $352 a night per room.

Over 150 hotels are being rented out to house illegal immigrants in New York City with rooms being rented out by the city for over $350 a night for those foreign nationals who have come to the city. This comes as the border as well as immigration have been a top concern for Americans going into the last month of the election.

According to the Daily Mail, New York City has warned that around 14,000 hotel rooms will be needed until next year for illegal immigrants being housed. The total cost is expected to reach a staggering $5.76 billion. Since 2022, over 200,000 foreign nationals who have come into the US have arrived in NYC. Many have been bussed in from other parts of the country by GOP governors in the southern parts of the US, letting some of the blue states know the consequences of mass illegal immigration.

Internet Archive hacked, data breach impacts 31 million users

Internet Archive's "The Wayback Machine" has suffered a data breach after a threat actor compromised the website and stole a user authentication database containing 31 million unique records.

News of the breach began circulating Wednesday afternoon after visitors to archive.org began seeing a JavaScript alert created by the hacker, stating that the Internet Archive was breached.

"Have you ever felt like the Internet Archive runs on sticks and is constantly on the verge of suffering a catastrophic security breach? It just happened. See 31 million of you on HIBP!," reads a JavaScript alert shown on the compromised archive.org site.

The text "HIBP" refers to is the Have I Been Pwned data breach notification service created by Troy Hunt, with whom threat actors commonly share stolen data to be added to the service.

Hunt told BleepingComputer that the threat actor shared the Internet Archive's authentication database nine days ago and it is a 6.4GB SQL file named "ia_users.sql." The database contains authentication information for registered members, including their email addresses, screen names, password change timestamps, Bcrypt-hashed passwords, and other internal data.

The most recent timestamp on the stolen records is September 28th, 2024, likely when the database was stolen.

Hunt says there are 31 million unique email addresses in the database, with many subscribed to the HIBP data breach notification service. The data will soon be added to HIBP, allowing users to enter their email and confirm if their data was exposed in this breach.

The data was confirmed to be real after Hunt contacted users listed in the databases, including cybersecurity researcher Scott Helme, who permitted BleepingComputer to share his exposed record.

Helme confirmed that the bcrypt-hashed password in the data record matched the brcrypt-hashed password stored in his password manager. He also confirmed that the timestamp in the database record matched the date when he last changed the password in his password manager.

‘New evidence emerges’ in Marilyn Manson sex-abuse case — as decision on charges expected ‘soon’

Prosecutors are investigating “new leads” about accused sex abuser Marilyn Manson — as they expect to decide “soon” on whether the shock rocker will face charges.

The 55-year-old goth singer, whose real name is Brian Warner, has already been investigated for years over accusations of rape, sexual assault and torture by at least a dozen women, including his former fiance, actor Evan Rachel Wood.

Even so, specialist sex crimes prosecutors are still “carefully reviewing new leads and additional evidence that continue to come to our attention,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in an update to the case Wednesday.

“New evidence has emerged within the last few weeks, adding to an already extensive case file presented to our office by the [Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department],” the DA said.

“It is our office’s responsibility to ensure that we have a complete picture of the admissible evidence available before making a filing decision,” he added.

“We anticipate making a filing decision soon and will provide an update when that time comes.”

Marriott Agrees To Pay $52 Million Penalty, Boost Security After Data Breaches

Marriott International has agreed to pay $52 million and implement necessary changes to its data security system in an effort to settle both state and federal claims following major data breaches that impacted more than 300 million of its customers around the globe. The data breaches took place from 2014 to 2020.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), attorneys general from 49 states, and the District of Columbia, reached separate settlement agreements with the hotel giant on Wednesday, Reuters reported. Both the FTC and the states conducted investigations into three data breaches during which hackers compromised sensitive customer information.

The Associated Press, citing the FTC's proposed complaint, reported that these "malicious actors" obtained sensitive information of the hotel chain's hundreds of million of customers such as their passport information, payment card numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and other personal information.

The FTC alleged that Marriott and its subsidiary, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, were responsible for the breaches due to inadequate data security measures. The commission indicated that the hotel operator failed to implement sufficient data protection, password controls, and network monitoring.

In Marriott's proposed settlement with the agency, the hotel-chain agreed to implement a tighter security program and offer all of its U.S. customers an option to request the deletion of any personal information linked to their email address or loyalty rewards account number.

"To settle the FTC's case, Marriott and Starwood have agreed to a proposed order that will require them to implement processes and checks designed to prevent future problems by protecting personal information, detecting problems as they arise, and fixing any issues in a timely manner," a business guidance from the FTC revealed.

The hotel chain also settled similar claims brought by 49 states and the District of Columbia. Besides boosting its data security practices, Marriott also will pay $52 million penalty to be split by the states.
