10 dead, 3 million without power amid widespread flooding in Florida after Hurricane Milton
In the wake of Hurricane Milton, Walt Disney World theme parks remained closed Thursday as Florida began recovery efforts and the park assessed damage. But the park will reoepen Friday, October 11, according to an update posted on Disney’s website Thursday evening.
Disney Park closures are a rarity, occurring only under exceptional circumstances. A closure for two days in a row is exceptionally rare. Walt Disney World in Orlando, particularly vulnerable to hurricanes, saw its first hurricane closure in 1999 due to Hurricane Floyd. The year 2004 was notably challenging, with the park closing three times for Hurricane Charley, Hurricane Frances, and Hurricane Jeanne. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma prompted a brief morning shutdown. More recently, the parks were closed for a day during Hurricane Matthew in 2016, for two days during Hurricane Irma in 2017, for half a day due to Hurricane Dorian in 2019, and for two days during Hurricane Ian in 2022, followed by an early closure for Hurricane Nicole later that same year.

University instructor on leave after calling to line up and shoot men who won't vote for female president
A University of Kansas instructor has been placed on leave after violent comments he made about men who don't support female presidential candidates went viral on social media.
In a video shared on X, the instructor railed against men who think they are smarter than women, before apparently connecting these thoughts to the presidential race.
[If you think] guys are smarter than girls, you got some serious problems," the instructor appeared to say to a lecture hall full of students at the start of the recording. "It’s what frustrates me, there are going to be some males in our society that will refuse to vote for a potential female president because they don’t think females are smart enough to be president."
"We can line all those guys up and shoot them. They clearly don’t understand the way the world works," he continued.
He quickly added, "Did I say that? Scratch that from the recording, I don’t want the dean hearing that I said that."
Videos of the violent remarks quickly spread on social media, drawing millions of views on Wednesday.
Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., responded to the clip by calling for the university to fire the instructor.
"Disturbing video from a University of Kansas professor. Anyone saying men who don’t vote for Kamala Harris should be ‘lined up and shot’ is deranged and shouldn’t be around students nor academia. I trust that the University of Kansas will take immediate action and fire this professor," the Republican wrote on X.

The University of Kansas confirmed the instructor was employed by the school and had been put on administrative leave while an investigation is under way.
"The university is aware of a classroom video in which an instructor made an inappropriate reference to violence," the university said in a statement.
"The instructor is being placed on administrative leave, pending further investigation. The instructor offers his sincerest apologies and deeply regrets the situation. His intent was to emphasize his advocacy for women's rights and equality, and he recognizes he did a very poor job of doing so. The university has an established process for situations like this and will follow that process."
The same university has drawn negative attention for offering a history course to students called "Angry White Male Studies."

Cops arrest 6 children — ages just 11 to 14 — after 3 armed robberies, 2 crashes on interstate highway
Police arrested three males ages 11, 12, and 13 years old and three females ages 12 and 14 years old.
Minneapolis police said they arrested six children — three males ages 11, 12, and 13 years old, and three females ages 12 and 14 years old — Tuesday after three armed robberies and a pair of crashes on Interstate 94, KMSP-TV reported.
The station said police responded around 11:30 a.m. to an armed robbery in the 5100 block of 41st Avenue South and a second armed robbery in the 3400 block of Bloomington Avenue.
Police said shots were fired at the victim from one of the involved vehicles in the second armed robbery, KMSP reported, adding that no one was hit by gunfire.
A third armed robbery took place around 1:30 p.m. near 24th Street and Pleasant Avenue, the station said.
Due to the three robberies' similarities, police said they activated their "crime pattern response protocol," KMSP reported.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies — including Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota State Patrol — "began flooding the area" to search for the vehicles involved in the robberies, the station said.
Numerous 911 calls came in about vehicles driving recklessly in Minneapolis, KMSP said. Police spotted one of the vehicles and tried to pull over the driver who instead fled, which led to a police pursuit that ended in a crash westbound on I-94 near Cedar Avenue, the station said.
KMSP, citing the release, said the vehicle's occupants fled on foot — but police "quickly apprehended" four individuals.
A second vehicle — which police said was stolen — was nearby and also crashed, police told the station. With that, two occupants from that vehicle fled on foot and were caught, KMSP said.
The station said three other vehicles were involved in the crashes, but none of the occupants in those vehicles were injured.
KMSP said six juveniles — three males ages 11, 12, and 13 years old, and three females ages 12 and 14 years old — were arrested after the crashes. They were taken to hospitals for evaluations concerning non-life-threatening injuries, the station said.
Police told KMSP the suspects were to be booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
The arrested 12-year-old male had "multiple prior contacts" with Minneapolis police while the others had "no or limited prior contact" with police and were to be "referred to juvenile diversion programs," the station said, citing the release.
KMSP said police were still investigating each child's involvement in the three robberies and if they were involved in any other criminal activity.
"The fact that I see this activity continuing with children so young — despite all our efforts — is incredibly frustrating and highlights the urgent need for action," Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said, according to the station. "I am grateful for the immediate response of law enforcement in finding and arresting these juveniles before they could cause more harm to members than of our community or themselves."

National Guard helicopter crew grounded for flying low over hurricane relief depot and scattering supplies
he North Carolina National Guard is investigating an incident caught on video in which one of their helicopters flew too low over hurricane relief volunteer tents and scattered their supplies.
The Black Hawk helicopter crew has been grounded as part of the investigation.
A Guard official said that the UH-60 helicopter crew was delivering generators when they flew too close to tents in Burnsville on Sunday.
“The crew immediately identified the situation, aborted the landing for safety reasons, and departed the area," said the official.
Officials said they were investigating the incident and are working with the aid organization to “assess the level of damage caused by the rotor wash.”
The aid organization was the United Cajun Navy, which tweeted about the incident and implied that it might have been intentional.
"Y'all, we're trying really hard to stay out of the conspiracy space, but some people aren't making it easy. This actually happened to a distribution site we supplied in WNC. Make it make sense please," the group posted, with video of the incident.
That missive garnered more than 5.1 million views.
United Cajun Navy Vice President Brian Trascher confirmed the investigation in a comment to Blaze News.
"We are grateful for the Swift actions taken by the National Guard and anxiously await the results of the investigation," said Trascher.
He also appeared on "The Glenn Beck Program" and described what the UCN knew about the incident.
Locals in the areas worst affected by Hurricane Helene have accused the federal government of stalling aid efforts, and some have even accused the federal government of impeding private aid organizations.

Israel seizes Unrwa headquarters' land in occupied East Jerusalem
Israel has confiscated land on which the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) is located in Jerusalem, with plans to build 1,440 settlement units on the site.
According to Israel Hayom, the free daily newspaper, the Israel Land Authority announced the confiscation of the land in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem.
Dan Iloz, a Likud MP, told the paper that the "expropriation of land in Jerusalem is an important step, but not enough" and denounced Unrwa as "a hotbed for terrorism under a humanitarian guise".
The announcement comes a day after members of the United Nations Security Council warned Israel against proceeding with a law, promoted by Iloz and others, aimed at curbing Unrwa's ability to operate.
The Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee approved two bills on Sunday which effectively aim at ending Unrwa's activity and privileges in Israel.
Washington's envoy to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, warned that the bill risked "hindering its ability to communicate with Israeli officials and removing privileges and immunities afforded to UN organizations and personnel around the globe".
In January, a number of countries suspended financing for the agency after Israel accused 12 of the 30,000 Unrwa employees of participating in Hamas's surprise attack on southern Israel on 7 October.
Most resumed funding, however, after a UN report found that Israeli authorities had not provided "any supporting evidence" to back up allegations of Unrwa staff links to Hamas.
Germany, Australia, Canada, Sweden and Japan were among the countries to restore funding to Unrwa following the report.
The US has held out on funding the organisation, however.
Algeria, a non-permanent Security Council member, warned on Wednesday that "for years, the Israeli authorities have made clear its desire, its will to dismantle Unrwa.
"It symbolises the Palestinian refugees and their inviolable rights. We reiterate that the rights of Palestinian refugees are not subject to statutes of limitation," said Amar Bendjama, ambassador of Algeria and its representative at the UN.
