Trump hires a new campaign communications chief in reboot with just three weeks left of the campaign

Oct. 11, 2024

Former President Donald Trump is making changes in his campaign team with Americans already voting early and Election Day just three weeks away.

He is elevating advisor Tim Murtaugh, who also advised his 2020 campaign, to head communications in his press operation.

The campaing isn't casting it as a shakeup, and the move comes at a time when Trump has seen polling improvement after getting a bounce before the Democratic convention and what her team sees as a successful debate performance.

His role will have him steering research, rapid response, and social media, two sources told Axios, which reported the move.

The news follows signs of aninternal power struggle that resulted in Trump campaign advisor Corey Lewandowski having his portfolio circumscribedand assuming the role of a prominent surrogate in TV appearances.

When he rejoined the campaign in August, Lewandowski called it an 'all hands on deck' moment and referred to himself as a 'personal envoy.' He then flew with Trump to his epic debate against Joe Biden.

Following reports he had been sidelined by co-campaign manager Susie Wiles, Lewandowski was back on Trump's campaign planeto his Saturday rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A Trump official told the Guardian Lewandowski 'blew himself up' after joining an 'entire staff has been working together for two years.' But Trump has long turned to him for guidance as part of the core group that backed his successful 2016 bid.

Murtaugh is himself a late addition, although he honed his skills in Trump world during the 2020 campaign.

Trump campaign advisor Tim Murtaugh will oversee research, rapid response, and social media in his new leadership role.

The Trump campaign's unusual structure continues to have Wiles and Chris LaCivita in the top roles, and the candidate continuing to take his own counsel on key decisions.(these two are not liked overall)

Trump was credited with a relatively disciplined primary effort under Wiles and LaCivita. (These two are real trouble makers, gossip, innuendo, leaks out. They are afraid of losing power. And Kellyanne leaks their gossip even though she's not on the team)

But he has had some communications stumbles in recent weeks, even while holding Vice President Kamala Harris dead even in key 'blue wall' states carried by Joe Bidan. The Harris camp immediately cut an ad about it, with plans to air it during Sunday's Detroit Lions game.

Sources told DailyMail.com during the August campaign staff changes that it was not a shakeup.Former campaign manager Kellyanne Conwaysaid Trump was 'superstitious to get the gang back together' and that it combined the 'hunger, swagger, underdog, underestimated, joy on the job ethos of 2016' with 'the accoutrements of a well-funded, organized, professionalized campaign structure.' (Kellyane is a real problem, and leaked lots of lying gossip. Why is she even there?)

'The Trump campaign has the best communications professionals in politics today. Nobody else is even close,' Wiles told Axios.

The change comes with Trump and Kamala Harris tied in battleground Pennsylvania, and Michigan, all states that Trump won in 2016 but lost to Joe Biden in 2020.

(Daily Mail always has to get a nasty jab in)
