Drug Trials Funded By Manufacturers Find 50 Percent Greater Drug Effectiveness

Drug studies sponsored by drug manufacturers tend to report higher drug efficacy than studies not sponsored by the drug company, a new report published in the Journal of Political Economy on Oct. 7 finds.

The report found a “sponsorship effect” that tends to bias sponsored studies toward reporting higher drug efficacies. The author could not find differences in study design between those funded by drug companies and those not.

“Removing the sponsorship effect would reduce the difference in efficacy … by about 50%,” Tamar Oostrom, an assistant professor of economics at Ohio State University, said in her paper.

“This effect was larger than I expected,” Oostrom told The Epoch Times over email. “My results suggest that sponsored arms of trials should be discounted substantially.”

She said that the difference in results between sponsored and unsponsored trials may be that “manufacturers are running multiple trials and selectively publishing those that are more favorable towards their drug.”

Even a small effect of bias by funding could affect the use of a drug, she noted.

Israel has arrested The Grayzone’s Jeremy Loffredo, an American journalist who had recently done some on the ground reporting on last week’s Iranian missile strikes in Israel.

Israeli news outlet Ynet reports that the charges against Loffredo “include aiding the enemy during wartime and providing information to the enemy,” which, as his fellow Grayzone reporter Kit Klarenberg notes, can be punished by the death penalty in Israel.

In other news, Axios reports that the US and Israeli governments have moved closer to a consensus on Israel’s coming “major attack” on Iran, with the Biden administration accepting that this enormous escalation is going to happen despite fears that it will spark a large-scale war.

“The Biden administration accepts that Israel will soon launch a major attack on Iran, but it fears that strikes on certain targets could dramatically escalate the regional war,” writes Axios’ Barak Ravid.

A UN inquiry has accused Israel of “extermination” because of its systematic destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system via “relentless and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities.”

“The report found that Israeli security forces have deliberately killed, detained and tortured medical personnel and targeted medical vehicles while tightening their siege on Gaza and restricting permits to leave the territory for medical treatment,” a UN press release reads. “These actions constitute the war crimes of willful killing and mistreatment and of the destruction of protected civilian property and the crime against humanity of extermination.”

If past behavior is a reliable indicator, the US will now dismiss these accusations, and Israel will promptly accuse the United Nations of antisemitism.

‘Absurd’ — African Pirate Given Prosthetic Leg, Residence Permit, and Integration Aid in Denmark After Attacking Danish Navy

The Kingdom of Denmark will pay for an “integration plan” and a prosthetic leg for a Nigerian pirate after granting him residency, two years after he attacked the Danish Navy off the coast of Africa.

Nigerian Lucky Frances will receive taxpayer-funded aid in attaining employment and education to help him “integrate” into Denmark after being brought to the country in 2021 when he lost his leg in a firefight with the Danish navy after his band of pirates attacked the Esbern Snare frigate off the coast of Africa, the local BT newspaper reports.

Not only did the African pirate avoid imprisonment for attacking the Danish sailors, despite being found guilty, but he was also granted a residence permit to remain in the country earlier this year. Adding insult to injury, a court ordered that the state pay for the Nigerian national to be fitted with a prosthetic leg.

“This is absolutely absurd. That man should never have been in Denmark and to imagine that he can now be meaningfully integrated in Denmark is completely over the moon,” said integration spokesman for the conservative-populist Danish People’s Party, Mikkel Bjørn.

Asked if it would be better to try to integrate Lucky, Bjørn retorted: “Well, his skills are to be a pirate, right? In any case, I can’t see that he can make a meaningful contribution to Danish society.”

“No, he shouldn’t be let out at all. He has tried to kill Danish soldiers, and therefore he should be in prison or in a closed immigration centre,” he added.

Even liberal Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said per Newsweek: “I cannot defend this decision.”

Nicaragua announced on Friday plans to break off relations with Israel over the war in Gaza, calling the Israeli government “fascist and genocidal.”

Nicaragua’s left-wing President Daniel Ortega, who has been fiercely critical of Israel’s yearlong war with the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, ordered ties to be cut, said Vice President Rosario Murillo, who is also Ortega’s wife.

The move is an essentially symbolic one, with ties between Israel and the central American country virtually nonexistent.

Israel has no ambassador in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua.

Israeli Force Infiltrated Into Southern Syria

A group of Israeli troops backed by armored vehicles infiltrated into southern Syria late on October 11, according to the Horan Free pro-opposition news blog.

The blog said that the infiltration took place near Kwdana, a town located in the southern countryside of al-Qunitra near the separation line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It claimed that the force swept an area 500 meters in depth and 1,000 meters wide, removing even olive trees.

The Israeli group later withdrew after installing a fence made up of barbed wire around the infiltrated area, according to the blog.

This was not the first such Israeli infiltration into southern Syria. Two days earlier, a similar group entered the Ruqqad Valley in the western Daraa countryside and seized a herd of sheep that belonged to locals.

Israel escalated its attacks on Syria significantly since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip last October, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Lebanese Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.

In addition to the reported infiltrations in southern Syria, Israeli drones and tanks shelled al-Qunitra and Rif Dimashq multiple times in recent days with one of the strikes killing a member of the country’s security forces. A series of strikes also hit several radar and air defense sites in Daraa and al-Suwayda.

These actions led to speculations that Israel may be planning a surprise invasion into southern Syria to further pressure Hezbollah and even Iran.

West announced that everyone at the event at the Santa Monica studio had to drink if they wanted to stay, and she was handed a beverage by West himself.

Pisciotta after a few sips 'suddenly started to feel disorientated and… began to slip into an altered and highly impaired state', the lawsuit read.

'She felt less in control of her body and speech and that is where [her] memories of the night escape her,' it claimed.

The next day, she felt 'ashamed and embarrassed' that she couldn't remember the evening and her musician client refused to discuss what happened.

Pisciotta claimed she only learned years later why her client 'was too traumatized and disturbed to speak about that night'.
